Lunar 2

I'm having a hard time and it's right at the beginning too. I'm in that blue dragon tower that's right behind my house and I know those spheres on pedestals are switches but I can't for the life of get them to do anything! I walk up to one, hit my X button, but nothing happens. I'm playing this on the ePSXe too. Could somebody tell me if there's either something wrong with me or something wrong with the game please?
