HL2 runs a bit slow here though, on a geforce2mx. Im guessing the game took the DX7 codepath on that card, and im playing it at 1024x768.

In half life (at least the new steam versions) you can assign a key and enable the console through the options dialog.
In doom3 id reckon the tilde (~, next to the 1 key on the left side) key should open the console but you may have to enable it command-line style.
