I say try DSL or Puppy-Linux. Im fairly cofident that Puppy-Linux lets you to install Puppy to USB card, so does DSL. I think you can copy it to a hard drive too. I think Slax is pretty good too.

PS: I dont think you should mess with your school's computers, If you mess something up, youll end up paying for it you know.
