Limits on sarcasm

3601 Views 57 Replies 18 Participants Last post by  Viper_Viper
i've noticed a few instances concerning the overuse of "sarcasm" to cover up immature behaviour around the forums these few days. not going to point any fingers, but just wanted to say that ppl shud really recheck/reevaluate wut it is they're doing/saying before doing it.

i guess wut i want to say is that things r funny to an extent, but theres a limit to everything.

Well when people use it an an excuse I can totally understand that ;) Can't stop sarcasm altogether tough, otherwise this forum would be dull :p

On the other hand some people take offence to easily IMO, but you can't control that either.

:heh: ... (the temptation :p)
Just like almost unreadable shorthand used on the net these days. Not pointing any fingers, of course. :p
hey, im an engineer and i write how i want. even on exams ;) welcome to university little boy :D

/me is a university engineering student whose Spanish vocabulary is vast enough to make the teachers use the dictionary when they are reading his works

So were we talking about a direct correlation about being student and being unable to speak properly? ... if you ask me it should be totally the opposite though, we are supposed to represent a cultural elite in our society.... if the group truly falls this low imagine how does that talk about humanity's average cultural level :heh:

Write like that in my university and expect marks to be deducted off :p It's pretty disgraceful for a university student to write like a 6 year old.

Ditto here.... if you have 3+ spelling, grammatical or writing mistakes, your work goes straight to the trash bin (you can be evaluated over 50 if the teacher is nice or if you beg enough though :p) (this includes comments in programming languages courses )
first of all let me congratulate you on ur excellent spanish.

i must say tho that english is a language i really dislike and im glad first year engineering science has no english course (we have engineering philosophy but no one reads the articles). this does not mean, however, that i hate the arts. heck im a pianist, a singer , and a martial artist. ive studied japanese with my uncle since i was 8 and before with my grandmother. just...i really dislike english :p

if you ask me it should be totally the opposite though, we are supposed to represent a cultural elite in our society.... if the group truly falls this low imagine how does that talk about our poor society
>.< i dont really care about representing anyone. i am me and i dont mind if ppl look at me badly because of the way i write. i do kind things to others and i expect others to be the same not only to me but to others as well. if ppl evaluate me/society/"my group" based on things that i do, then good for them.

not because i am "supposed" to represent anything/anyone. i also criticize others because i think they are doing something wrong simply because it doesnt feel rite any other way.

well, if u look carefully, u'll notice that my grammar is mostly all correct :D. u see, the thing is, i have a 4/5 for Advanced Placement English, so i DO have a first year university english credit. and i know where the limits are- i dont write like that for long answer questions or on essays. i AM an engineering student after all ;)

Down with internet shorthand! I mean how much harder is it to write full words? Why even bother typing "wut" when you can type "what"? I fail to see the reason.

 Seriously though, I couldn't help noticing the excessive use of sarcasm as well. Not a huge deal though, it has been a little bit much lately.
XD. if u really want to know y i type wut, watch:

when u type "what", ur hand needs to move btwn the third and fourth rows

when u say "wut" u only need to move ur hand in the third row.

tho i must say that sometimes my use of shorthand depends on my mood really. sometimes it gets bad, but as long as my grammar is correct i hardly care.

Sorry, my point wasn't really about representing anyone or anything. It's just a culture of perfection in everything you do that more people should have... specially for those that strive to do something bigger and more important in this world (eg engineers, scientists, etc).

I am NOT pointing fingers at anyone, but I feel that nowadays more and more people are giving themselves to mediocrity, and at best only putting their best effort in that which interests them. This type of actitude is what is leading us to our current state of society degradation (people barely fighting for something more than surviving, or just "pass the day" or something along that).

And IMO, indiference towards a language (be it the first, second, third or whatever) is an early symptom I have saw...

Of course I am not telling you to like English from now on. I would just like you to ask yourself if it's worth to crap on all the effort you've made up to know properly learning English with such a poor usage

Disclaimer: I am, by no means, saying that I'm a perfect English writer, and I recognize that sometimes my posts are plain Engrish... my point here is about people that do it and don't care about it at all.

Indeed, agreed Proto.

No disrespect to you D.D, I think you're a great person. :)
I see. Well I guess it depends on how you type. Again, not a big deal. I never said anyone was a bad person either, because of the way they type.:)
hahaha. sry to be a disappointment proto but im not the kind of engineer who dreams of something bigger and more important in this world. im one of the lowly ones who just want to get by while living comfortably.

but then again. everyone has their ways of getting by in the world. just maybe mine is different from yours for now. i mean, im still young compared to u so there may be a point where i mite start wanting to be a perfectionist too.

unfortunately, my dislike of certain aspects of western culture will prolly never change.

EDIT: haha thx guys. thats y i like emuforums - so many of the members r simply here to help / accept others. for instance, so far, this thread has gone totally off topic :D but who gives??? :) :) :)
Of course, I didn't mean to demean anyone as well. (it's just that I got a little worried when you mentioned that you did this at uni as well, and that you didn't care about it at all )

i mean, im still young compared to u
geez.... I'm getting so many of these lately that you will end up making me believe that I'm actually an old geezer (I'm just 20 for G*d sake  )

But don't worry, I got a bit carried away. Please forgive me if I said anything too sensible :)
Yeah I find internet shorthand as well as leet speak as a way to communicate pretty childish and comes off as a lack of intelligence, but it just becomes another stereotype to judge people which I don't like, but sometimes can't help feeling. When it comes to forums and other writing forms it is all we have to judge on. Doing it once in awhile for fun is just having fun, but all the time can be annoying. :D

As for the sarcasm goes it seems fine to me as long as people don't take offense to it .. once it gets to that point it is no longer sarcasm .. just someone being an *******.

is can be a pretty funny way to defeat keylogger programs (mostly library) if the guy who uses it don't know l337sp33k
o_O ur library uses keylogging programs? are these on the library book search terminals or also on the net terminals?

sidenote: i seriously cannot understand how ppl can talk in "L337" speak. to me it seems more work is required to use that than is required to talk normally!
No doubt eh? But this thread hass gone a little bit off topic if I say so myself ;)
