Lake disappears, baffling villagers

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian village was left baffled Thursday after its lake disappeared overnight.
NTV television showed pictures of a giant muddy hole bathed in summer sun, while fishermen from the village of Bolotnikovo looked on disconsolately.

"It is very dangerous. If a person had been in this disaster, he would have had almost no chance of survival. The trees flew downwards, under the ground," said Dmitry Zaitsev, a local Emergencies Ministry official interviewed by the channel.

Officials in Nizhegorodskaya region, on the Volga river east of Moscow, said water in the lake might have been sucked down into an underground water-course or cave system, but some villagers had more sinister explanations.

"I am thinking, well, America has finally got to us," said one old woman, as she sat on the ground outside her house.

Aliens, being a believer myself.. it is so obvious something is going on

Everything seems to be much clearer to me now.

Aliens are residing at the earth's mantle for hundreds of years now, and they're sucking the earth dry for their hydro-chemical weapons to be used later on!

It's not unheard of. Specially in a cold place like Russia.

Many lakes accumulate lots of frozen CO2 underneath the water, and any disturbance in this layer can shift it's temperature and make it evaporate. The amount of actual water can be pretty small in shallow lakes in cold places.

It has happened in hot places too, with deadly results. It happened in Cameroon in 1986.

There're other possibilities too, such as a geological fault running under the lake.

There's no need to invoke aliens. In fact, there's never a need to invoke aliens to explain anything (if anything, the UFO believers should explain Fermi's Paradox).

Possible, but not likely.

The Sun is a Population I star . Therefore, it's relatively young (being "only" 4.5 billion years old).

Population II stars can be much older, up to 12-14 billion years. They were formed when the galaxy was still young, and they're usually found far from the galaxy disk (the oldest being in the halo or globular clusters). Population II stars are poor in metals, because they weren't "seeded" by supernovae, unlike their younger counterparts (elements higher than iron [z=26] cannot be produced by conventional atomic fusion).

So, there're lots of stars who are much older than the Sun, which had the potential to house intelligent life long before our sun even existed. Humans have only existed for an infinitesimal part of the age of our planet (not to mention the galaxy). We've been around in our present form only for the last ten thousand years or so. This is ridiculously little time once you think about it in cosmic terms.

Whole civilizations and galactic empires could have flourished and fallen before the Earth even existed. And it took us more than 4 billion years to appear here on this planet.

Do you really think that it's likely that we're the most advanced civilization in a galaxy with more than a hundred billion stars? If this is the case, then it's almost certainly not random. There must be an explanation for this fact (or maybe the other races don't like space exploration, and they'd rather go to a virtual world instead... or maybe there's something like the Prime Directive going on...), other than pure chance.

One possible explanation was proposed by the economist Robin Hanson. He argues that some step in the evolutionary path towards space colonization is very improbable, therefore leaving us with few or no intelligent species able to colonize the galaxy (either due to unlikely steps in biological evolution or the danger presented by disruptive future technologies; or other unlikely step we still haven't thought of). Hanson calls this the Great Filter; you can find Hanson's original paper here .

just incase noone knows, ufo's dematerialize where you cant see them.. Watch nasa UFO video, that is authentic NOT fake from 1996.. it just literally appears out of nowhere (or so it seems). They estimated the size of the craft to be 2-3 miles long

and in 2000, or 2001.. A woman from england captured 20 minutes or thereabouts.. of video footage of a UFO that looks identical to the one nasa space shuttle had captured on video, apparently she got paid 20 grand by nasa just for that footage.

now what does that tell you?

now what does that tell you?

It tells me that you've been deluded by the UFO believers with these hoaxes and unsubstantiated claims. To this date, there're no authentic UFO videos, except those people want to believe.

Well, I believe my friend's friend telling that miniature elephants were robbing the local bank the other day. They were turned tiny by a governmental secret weapon called the shrinkray¹ (hello, embezzled funds!) and trained by a squad of ex-cons under leadership of Mr. T. He has no proof, but 1 B3L13V3!!1

Authentic? what are you on about? ok.. here http://ufonasa.terra-ent.com/ this is VERY real.. i feel pitty for everyone who believes that we "are" alone in the entire universe.. Just because they think people will make fun of them for saying it in public.

The size of the universe is colossal, we cant even get out of our galaxy in 1 persons lifetime nevermind the universe.. Not only that, but with the black hole in the center of our universe there is a good chance that multiverse theory is true.

For people who do not understand this, go and research and i think you will change your opinion on this matter entirely.

Does everyone really think that this is all that life has to offer? Then i wonder why there is gazillions of planets

Give me something authenticated by a serious research group, composed of real scientists and I'll lend some credence to your beliefs.

Now I'll patiently until you claim that most scientists are involved in a conspiracy to hide the facts.

And who said that we're alone in the universe? I certainly didn't.

I just think that we haven't been visited yet, for many, many reasons (see my Great Filter thread. It may enlighten you about my views). And these fake videos do not to convince me otherwise.

Where is the center of the universe? If you know, please tell me, because AFAIK no astronomer knows it (in fact, it don't even exist, considering that the universe is both homogeneous and isotropic).

There's an hypothesized black hole in the center of our galaxy, but I fail to see what relevance it has to the multiverse theory (and what kind of Multiverse are we talking about? Tegmark's? Wheeler's? Smolin's? Linde's?).

I've read A LOT on this, so tell it to someone else.
My current opinions come from all that I've read (and believe me, I read astronomy stuff all the time, from reputable scientific papers).

that video is a fake you say, yet there is no proof.. it has not been debunked by anyone, so there you have it.

Also please tell me what kind of secret aircraft can not show itsself as whole, you only see light.. Then something drops off, the craft or whatever it is has split into 2.. it moves extremely slowly then just disappears? Hmmm

I have recently bought a DVD off a website, this guy films ufo's out his garden.. he filmed one of a rod like appearance just still in the sky, after a few minutes of filming it just disappeared.. didnt go up, down, left or right So what other explanation can it be?

i suppose we are going to have these talks of optical delusions now? yet they are on camera and not fake.

Debunk a video? Why not try to debunk the Star War movie? So many aliens there, but you can't prove it's not true
