Amazingly enough, the best joystick I have only cost me $6. It's a Logic3 USB eight button gamepad I picked up at EB. Though it's only analog and lacks start/select buttons, I've never really found this to be much of an bother. It's supported natively by both Windows 98 and 2000.

While I'm thinking of it, does anyone here know of a website or book that details how one could go about writing a DirectX compatible driver for a joypad or, failing that, how to go about reading information from a given USB port?

I use an actual PSX Dual Shock controller. It is hooked to my PCs USB port by a cable made by Pelican Accessories. The cable does not support the Dual Schock function (rumble), but I'm looking into getting an adapter that will. For now, though, this arrangement suits me just fine. No guessing about which buttons to press or any thing else, just load up and go. :D

heh almost forgot about xAix:

i use the Gravis Gamepad Pro in general, which has all 10 standard buttons. But recently got a free gameport gamepad with 8 buttons (no select, start), but a better dpad. so i'm kinda switching between the two.

Gran Turismo 1 is an exception. for which i use a joystick (CH Gamestick 3D USB) as a NegCon device in bleem! 1.5b
