President Barack Obama has paid tribute to his "friend and mentor", Edward Kennedy, at the senator's funeral Mass in Boston.
Mr Obama said Senator Kennedy was the "greatest legislator of our time" and a "champion for those who had none".
The body of Senator Kennedy, who died on Tuesday of brain cancer aged 77, has now been flown to Washington.
He will be buried in nearby Arlington National Cemetery near his assassinated brothers, ex-President John and Robert.
During a two-day public viewing at the John F Kennedy Presidential Library, some 50,000 people paid their respects before the Massachusetts senator's flag-draped coffin.
Private meeting
President Obama said in his eulogy at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica: "I knew him as a colleague, a mentor and above all as a friend."

Bah. Why must you remind me. I've avoided watching TV for the past couple days because this thing is almost as overblown as MJ's death.

I guess they feel it's important since he had a huge impact on your country.

Les Paul died, and he didnt get that much media attention, even though we wouldnt have guitars the way we have right now if we didnt have him.

Ted Kennedy was just another senator, it just so happens to be he is the youngest of the 4 Kennedy brothers.

I see no reason to give his death that much attention other than his immediate support for Obama, which isnt even a good reason to begin with.

Huge impact? He's a fat drunk that killed his first wife 40 years ago after he drove drunk off the **** Bridge in Massachusetts. The only reason his death is such a big deal is because he's "a Kennedy".

He was even buried in Arlington National Cemetery. That's a military cemetery and these days you have to do something important for your country to be buried there. His brother, John (JFK) was buried there for his accomplishments in the Navy during WWII and safely averting the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ted is a murderer who got off the hook. As a former Navy serviceman, I cannot disagree more with the decision to bury him there or the amount of television coverage his death has received.

Kennedy had a death wish to repeal a Massachusetts law that prohibited the governor from appointing a replacement senator to serve until the next election cycle. The irony here is that Kennedy supported this same law a few years ago. Why? When John Kerry was running for president, there was a Republican governor in the seat (Mitt Romney). If Kerry happened to win, Romney would of replaced that empty Senate seat with a Republican. Now that there is a Obama-leg-humping governor holding power (Deval Patrick), they now want to be able to let the governor appoint the senate replacement instead. They're making a big deal out of this because the open senate seat is now the key 60th seat for a filibuster-proof senate.

If things stay the way they are, there will be a special election within 3 months.....Kerry is the senator for my district, so I won't be partaking.

Kennedy was just another scumbag politician who happened to get away with murder. No need to worry about any other Kennedy.....Patrick Kennedy is in and out of alcohol rehab while trying to be a Rhode Island representative

You guys are pretty judgmental on someone you've never met............
What's wrong with stating the facts?

He had the power to do good things and yet he pissed away his life as another two bit politician, twisting laws to suit himself and affirming that a man in his position is favored in a court of law.
