A friend of mine gave it to me so i could check if i can save some files he has in it but even when i set it to slave my pc is stuck at the bios at the "Detecting ide drives" line. Is there a way i can boot so i can see what is inside?

Make sure your original drive is set to "Master" or set them both to "cable select". Otherwise it's SOL. Sorry.

If the data is of great importance, there are data extraction techniques available, but they cost big time (think >$1k).

You can try taking off your HDD and let only the one you wanna test.
If you can, try in other pc as well.
