No, you don't have to make any backups on cd-r. At leat not if you have the ISO on the hardrive already... (and if you don't you really don't need to create another backup!)

Just mount the ISO with a virtual cd program (I prefer deamon tools).
Then use a program to write an ISO from the virtual cd (I prefer blindwrite)
It works I've tried it.

No need to waste cd-r :)
