I loaded Final Fantasy 8, and tried to boot up one of my saves. So, I clicked on Memory Card slot 1, and it says that its 'Not Formatted', despite the fact it's been working fine for the past 3 weeks. Then I tried to extract the saves themselves from the .mcr file using a memory card program, and it said that the file isn't a valid memory card file. Have I somehow managed to corrupt my save data? If so, is there any possible way I can get my saves back?

Try checking your drive for errors.

From Windows Explorer, right click the drive (Local Disc (C:), for example)
Then click on properties, on that window go to the Tools tab, click "Check Now"
button.
