I started to play Everquest 2 a few months ago (or as ChaosBlade quaintly putted it I sold to the other side :p )... I joined a Teir'Dal guild (Teir'Dal is the name given to the race of drow elves in the world of Norrath) and I noticed that a lot of them spoke in drow like you'd speak your normal language, so I was like... wtf is going on? Is the level of geeknes so strong on MMORPGs?

Fortunately, not. Today I finally found the answer ... real funny **** if you are into these kind of language stuff... ;)

Lame, Not cool, totally lame

"lame, naut jiole, totally lame"
And yet you cared enough to translate it and all... ain't that funny?
It's an example of geekness of the MMORPG community, nonetheless :p
Only geeks will bother translating to and from a fictional language... and actually using it in-game.

BTW, is Everquest 2 as awesome as claimed?

And if you ever need to learn a crafted language, give Lojban a try: http://www.lojban.org/eo/

It's formal syntax can be fairly amusing ;)

Actually the Drow language comes from Pen & Paper RPGs... PC D&D Based RPGs also use it (like the Baldur's Gate saga). MMORPG players just adopted it... they didn't create it ;)

It's all for the sake of roleplaying... I don't see it as something that bad. That is, if you are into role playing... this game stirs some serious memories from my Pen & Paper RPG sessions...

I didn't know it was claimed to be awesome... most people I know either hate it or hate SoE :p
The game is great... it has its flaws as any game. Sony is doing a very good job at fixing them. For example, the gameplay was inclined too much towards group mechanics. A patch released yesterday included 8 new zones for solo/duo players so now you can level up without the desperate need of a full party. Just to name an example.

As for me, I joined for the Roleplaying component (which I have to admit, I was sckeptic when I was told this game had it) and I have to admit that so far it is quite impressive... with some more work this (not EQ2 per se but the genre itself) could be an evolution of old Pen & Paper Role playing games.

I was just poking fun at the players :p

I've seen a few people claiming it was awesome, though.

Sounds interesting… but my main problem with MMORPGs is that they’re too time-consuming. And time is a commodity that I severely lack nowadays…
I think this kind of thing is quite interesting!! LOL.

That's a misconception on MMORPGs based on the nature of experience-grinding players (aka beasts who level up like there is no tomorrow). I don't play for level advancement unless it is strictly necessary for RP events (for example, getting access to new lands). Time is a commodity I lack as well and I'd love to say that this game didn't have any impact on that... good news is that I am not less responsible than before, bad news is that now I have one hour less of sleep :p

On weekends it gets pretty cool tho... my guild always hold some good RP event... again, brings back good memories from the good old P&P days.

Yeah, though makes me wonder what kind of job on your tongue would be required to speak drow language proficiently...

The problem is that with all the book-reading (not to mention my academic papers-hunts) I do, and the fact that I've a full-time job, and the other games that I still like to play, I'm seriously short on time.

I'm most active here on Ngemu while I'm at work, since I can just pretend to do some work and surf the web. But playing games at work would be too much :p
ahh... finally another language to say "jal dosst zig ph' wund'akh ulu udossa" in...

and look! they say 'zig'. coincidence?
folkhel sei'lor udossa phor l' bomb
Hara pnet truru rei gan otwev a ne ort 'iep fan ep en geen!
