A Push to Restrict Sales of Video Games

"This is all about protecting our children until they are old enough to protect themselves," said Blagojevich in a written statement. "There's a reason why we don't let kids smoke or drink alcohol or drive a car until they reach a certain age and level of maturity."

"Blagojevich said the legislation would define "violent" games as those in which characters physically hurt one another. "Sexually explicit" games would be those featuring nudity that "predominantly appeals to the prurient interest of the player.""

Protecting children is the job of the parents. They're the ones to blame, not the video games. It's just the avoidance of responsibility.

Makes me want to become a terrorist and kill politicians and the RIAA.
i guess he would rather have children watching "violent" and "Sexually explicit" material on TV and in movies. what a jerk. BTW check out his pic in the link. he looks retarded :p
*meanwhile his own kids light it up in the backyard and in the washroom.
Comparing video games... to drugs and alcohol... hello? This guy has no concept of a fair comparison, besides if you want to stop an industry thats showing violent material the gold is in the movies, not the games.

"I'm sorry but we can't let you play Tekken 3, but you can hire out the Resident Evil movie if you want."

Case closed.
He looks like bitter-beer-face-man. Must have been all that jizz he swallowed when he went down on all those PTA Man-Moms.
What's he talking about? Game have age ratings that stop kids from buying these games. They don't always work, but the same can be said for movies. It's the parents fault for buying the kids these games and it's the retailers fault for selling to underage kids. I don't care for age ratings myself, kids aren't as stupid as people think.
Hah, time to start auctioning my collection to the people of Illinois at obscene amounts of money... let's start the bids on Fear Effect at say... 1000 bucks
Level of maturity my @$$. I've seen some people in there 30's who still don't have the proper level of maturity to be driving a car or watching a violent movie.
this is nothing new. all this guy is saying is that he wants to enforce ESRB thing. its not like he's pushing to ban them, he just wants to make sure underage people don't BUY the games. doesn't mean mom or dad can't get it for them.
People seriously have to realise that game ratings are the same as movie ratings

I saw a TV show by that scientist with the moustache where he was talking about the reaction of violent videogames on 5 year olds. The parent actually SAT BESIDE THE KID AND WATCHED HIM PLAY HALO!! FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!! BBC WAS TECHNICALLY PROMOTING AN ILLEGAL ACTIVITY WHILST SHOWING THIS PROGRAMME!!

I really hate people who claim games are up there with Hitler and Stalin.

At the end of the day it comes down to the parent of the child and their teachers telling them the difference between right and wrong, between real and fantasy. The first movie I ever watched was The Terminator when I was 4 years old. I didn't go shoot up a police station now did I?
Well at age 4 that would be a bit hard :p

But yeah all this is BS, this is just a way of parents putting the blame on something else.
I'm just wondering what this meant...

"Blagojevich said the legislation would define "violent" games as those in which characters physically hurt one another. "

Does this mean Teen games will no longer be 'ok' for teens? Because there are many non "M" games that fit this profile...
I've said it before and I'll say it again, "If a child can't tell the difference between a video game and real life or even a cartoon and real life, then that is a child with a very serious problem." Such a child should have therapy because there is something very very wrong with their perception of what is real and what is not.

And if a parent can't spend enough time in their kid's life to see what type of stuff they play and watch and regulate it accordingly, then they shouldn't have had kids.

Are those people crazy?
Parents nowadays are far too lazy to teach their kids. They'd rather just point the finger at other people to make up for their lack of parentage.

It's the same reaction they gave with Maddox's site. They can't be assed teaching their kids right from wrong and are afraid to discipline their kids when they do wrong, so instead, they just form "pressure groups" to subvert the First Amendment and other Free-Speech vanguards.

I wonder what our kids will be like, lol. :D I'd actually take the time out from my life to spend time with my kid unlike others. I wouldn't just sit them down at the TV so I could go get drunk or whatever, i'd actually commit time just to pwn him at Halo 2 or Tekken. :D
I blame it on the courts...
let me elaborate.. These days parents, teachers, heck the local walmart door person can be sued for disciplining a child...Time outs do NOT work, regardless of what the so called analysts say. Because of this, kids are spoiled. They do not see anything wrong with buying somethign (Am M rated game) that they are not suppose to have. So what do they do?? they throw a temper tantrum and the parent buys it. From the parents perspective, what are they going to do?? they can't spank he child for fear of getting taken to court...So I say bring back discipline.. actually SPANK a child for behaving badly, both in school and With the parents. I have 2 sisters that are teachers and they both agree, kids have gotten completely out of control since spanking was eliminated from the public school system. Interestingly enough, Drug use started really rising about the same time...

True.

Children have far too many rights nowadays, and they KNOW their rights as well. Raise a hand to them, or just SAY something to them that they do not like, and they could go running to the press/authorities/whatever and easily say "my parent assaulted/abused me!" Forget the truth, your character is assassinated quicker than Pope Leo V. Children, IMO, are the stupidest element of society next to a dog. Their rights should be limited to the point of basic civil and human rights.

When I was a kid i wasn't spoiled, hell I didn't get pocket money until I was 10 (and it was only around £4 per week.) I got corporal punishment from my parents until I was around 8. I can honestly say it corrected me (I never ran out infront of fast-moving cars again.) Also, I really wanted a NES when i was a kid, apparently I didn't shut up about it. I eventually got an Atari ST, but hell, it was cheaper and suited me fine.

And all this B.S. about "Attention Deficit Disorder" or something, bleh, just another invented disease for GlaxoSmithKline to rake another £50,000,000,000 from parents who are far too lazy, and to justify their laziness. "I'm not a bad parent, my child has a RECENTLY DISCOVERED mental problem!!" F**k that sh!t right there, ADD (or ADHD) is nothing that corporal punishment and spending quality time with the kids cannot solve.
