for example, whenever I go to menu mode and try to view the stats of my characters, only a black screen shows up.

also there are speed discrepancies, sometimes the game will run twice as slow, other times, twice as fast, and that with the "-noauto" command line.

but main problem is still the black screen.

are you using epsxe 1.5.2 as well as the odd/even bit hack in the special game fixes section of your graphics plugin (dont forget to enable special game fixes as well)?
It works perfectly for me when I do that.

Have you tried using screen smoothing? To me it removes the black screen on equip, elements etc. screens ...
