Ugh, I doubt it'd be any better. If you want any significant improvement you shouldn't aim any lower than a 4670, because that's when they start to use DDR3. The 4670 is about the equal of the HD3850, but uses much less power and all. I'm very happy with its performance in my GF's PC :)

Back in the days the 3850 was the card that made the entire Geforce 8600 series obsolete because it offered much better performance/$. But this card you're looking at now is simply a low end model:
- DDR2: Ugh....
- 64 bit memory interface: To further choke the memory bandwidth
- 80 stream processors: It starts to get fun at 320 (like the 3850 if I'm not mistaken)
- OMG Overclocked!: No matter how you "pimp" it, it's still the Fiat Panda of videocards -_-

Sorry dude, stick with your current card ;)

get the ATI HD 4770 instead. It's a cheap card and will surely out preform your 8600GT by a longshot.

the 4770 is on par with the 8800GTS/Ultra and the 9800GTX+/GTS250

And the 4770 has more overclocking headroom than other cards.
After using rivatuner to overclock it past CCC's max, it will out perform the 9800GTX+/GTS250

This guy scored 17k 3dmark 06 with a 980MHz Core overclock. If i didn't have my 4870, this would be my card! XD

Save up more money and get something that is more "worthwhile" ;p. These days, I wouldn't settle for anything less than 1GB memory. But for other 512mb is good enough and be sure that it has 256-bits memory interface.

unless its GDDR5, 256bit isn't enough width to make 1GB worthwhile.
