Time quotes Bill Gates saying Sony's next-gen console will "walk into" the Xbox 360 follow-up to the best-selling sci-fi shooter.

For months, the Web was rife with rumors that Microsoft would ship the sequel to Halo 2 for the Xbox 360 simultaneously with the launch of the PlayStation 3. Now, that has been confirmed--by none other than Bill Gates himself.

In next week's issue of Time Magazine--which features Gates holding the Xbox 360 on the cover--Gates mentioned plans for the release of the much-anticipated follow-up to the best-selling console shooter. In a parenthetical sidebar in the article, Time says the following:

"Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

While Microsoft reps were not available for comment as of press time, Gates' comments appear to confirm the theory that Microsoft will release Halo 3 either simultaneously or near the release of Sony's next-gen console. It also marks further official confirmation that a third Halo is indeed in the works, and will be released for the Xbox 360.

Although such statements might be interpreted as grandstanding, such a maneuver definitely would have an impact. Halo 2 sold over 6.5 million copies to date, and is credited with doubling the subscriber base of Xbox Live from around 750,000 to over 1.5 million. It is also credited by industry-watchers as one of the main reasons for boosting sales of the original Xbox last holiday season.

i doubt it. I generally hate FPS. Microsoft will have to have something that sparks my interests to warrent buying it. Nothing looked interestint to me on the original xbox so i've never owned an xbox.

Last I checked, Microsoft wasn't trying to figure out how they can please Seta-San. I'm sure the 2.38 million people that purchased Halo 2 within the first 24 hours of its release will be satisfied.

I can't wait till the PS3 is announced! if it indeed has 3 times as much power as the xbox 360 ( which would be insane ) Halo 3 won't be a powerful enough stab.

(for the following please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not 100% sure)
From what I've read on Cell processor so far, it seems it'll be a very, very strong processor at least for multmedia stuff (which includes games). IIRC, each Cell can do 8 threads simultaneously, and Sony is going to put 4 of them in a PS3, allowing 32 threads to be processed simultaneously. I have not heard of anything about PS3's GPU though, except that Nvidia will be the one doing it. I think it'd be hard to say PS3 is x times more powerful than Xbox 360 since their architectures are vastly different, but I'm under the impression that for the CPU aspect, PS3 is going to be superior to Xbox 360.

As for MS's tactic against Sony's launch... well, business is business, I wouldn't call it evil. Sony REALLY need to work on locking in famous developers though, which is something I think Xbox 360 is successful at doing.

Tottaly agree, the only thing that the xbox 360 has over the PS3 looks to be its online capiblilitys.

As much as I LOVE my ps2 I think that this is trouble for the ps3 the Halo 3 name just drips with anticipation. grr this makes my decision that much harder, even though there isn't much to read about to decide anyway.

haha I find it kinda funny...hmm...I don't know how to if it's a good thing or a bad thing(against or for MS) meaning could that drive some people away from buying a 360 and just get a ps2 since some people might only have an xbox for HAYLOLOLO...?

Wishfull thinking I say. Yeah, im sure all the sony fans will just up and drop the ps3 _just_ because halo3 comes out? No sales will be gained or lost, people wont change consoles because of friggin halo ffs.

Indeed. The userbase of the Playstation and XBox are quite different IMO. This may sway some of the undecideds, but an RPG freak will likely stick to the PS name given thier sucess in past generations.
While true that the Xbox had a couple of RPGs of note... well; Sudeki was average and has been ported to the PC. KOTOR/2 were both great but have been ported to the PC. Fable was great, but that too is being ported to the PC, along with extra content. The only RPG of note that the XBox has that is exclusive is Jade Empire. Compare that to a somewhat extensive RPG library on Sony's machine.
The XBox had the advantage of power. It has some great action games, a GT4 killer (Forza Motorsport completely pisses all over GT4), some other great racing games and the best looking ports, but the Jap fanboys will be dissapointed with such a library and probably go for Sony as the safe bet.
The westerners? They are the ones MS is gonna win over.

if it's anything like halo 2 i know i'll dispise it. Halo had the forumla for fps perfect, then they tweaked it to hell.
