Well I got Half-Life 2 for my birthday and up until a few days ago it was working fine. But then I got this weird steam error and was informed on the official steam forums that the server was messed up and reinstalling should fix the problem. So I reinstalled steam and when I went to update it I once again got the error saying steam was offline. Since I've got an un-updated steam it means I can't even run it to set steam in offline mode... is there a way to fix this?

I gather circumventing steam is illegal, but really this is preventing me from playing it.

Just and idea? if you're not connected to the internet, won't steam automatically start in offline mode? I think it did for me.

Steams always do weird stuff when it's supposed to update or DL games, just reinstall it
once again (delete clientregistry.blob first), and retry. You may have to relaunch steam several times to fonish installing it, mostly due to their servers being slow as hell :p

Accounts that use hacks are banned for life when detected. If you plan to use this kind of tool, make sure you're offline ;)

I found the problem... I had accidently capped Steam with Net Limiter to 5kb/s when it was downloading something I didn't want... I forgot to uncap it so it wasn't fast enough to log in. Yay :).

i think it's hilarious when people are like "HOLY **** I HAVE A HUGE PROBLEM HOW DO I WHAT DO I OMG WHAT oh oops one small option....k see ya :emb: "

it reminds me of this one time, i was having problems with MPC, whenever someone would sign on AIM and cause a popup window, my MPC would freak out. when i played PSX games and used OGL2, it would go less than 1 fps. i was using my 6800 and i didnt get why these programs were so slow. i posted it here, and frantically searched for solutions.

in the end, i found out that i had 16x AA on the entire time :p

Hehe, I hate making stupid mistakes like that. One time I tried setting up a huge network but it all failed... turned out I forgot to turn it on :p.
