Gradius-like game?

I'm trying to remember the name of a game i played a few years back. It played like Gradius-left to right scrolling arcade shooter-but it had a piece of the ship that could detach. I remember playing the demo for this game, and there was this fmv with seagulls and the ship you control flying through this ruined city in the ocean.

It was an epic game, and i want to get it now that i have a ps2 of sorts of my own. Anyone have any idea what I'm referring to?

edit: from what i've seen, gradius mostly takes place in space, the game i'm remembering took place on earth i think.

R-Type Final, not just R-Type. His description matches the first stage.
Also, Raiden Trad isn't a side scroller, and is a bit old for a PS2 game?

It's a classic. I didn't pay attention to his PS2 reference.

I was going by the awesomeness of the game itself.
