http://www.google.com/talk/

hey say talk is cheap. Google thinks it should be free. Google Talk enables you to call or send instant messages to your friends for free–anytime, anywhere in the world. Google Talk offers you:

* Choice: Get in touch how and when you want to–over email, IM or a call

* Quality: Talk through your computer but hear your friends as if they were in the same room

* Convenience: Your Gmail contacts are pre-loaded into Google Talk so inviting or talking to your friends is just a click away

Google Talk is in beta and requires a Gmail username and password.

The program's pretty sparse right now. And it doesn't use the windows GUI either. Ugh, that drives me nuts. :???: However, it's already got a nifty telephone feature that's a snap to use. Not that we haven't seen the sort of thing before...

Anyway, nobody is actually going to make a complete switch to this. It'll just become another screenname to add to the pile you log in to with Trillian or Gaim or whatever. What a nuisance... I just think it's too late in the IM world for a new kid in town to stand a real chance, even if it is Google. :(

It's just another step in Google's world domination plan. Currently the only good thing about google is the "searh" though all the other stuff is just crap!

The next step is very easy "Google people search" they know a whole lot about people, from first reading all emails that gmail users send, and now from the IM from people using google talk.

So you can write a name, a feature, or just a general text and end up finding a person.

Hey...didn't think about that. I wonder if Google's banking our im conversations with Talk just like it does with Gmail... :cuss2:

*edit*

Eh well, aside from storing just about everything else, it seems that they're not looking at our conversations. Or so they say anyway.
When you use Google Talk, we may record information about your usage of Google Talk, such as when you use Google Talk, the size of your contact list and the contacts you communicate with, and the frequency and size of data transfers. Information displayed or clicked on in the Google Talk interface (including UI elements, settings, and other information) is also recorded. We use this information internally to deliver the best possible service to you, such as improving the Google Talk user interface and maintaining a consistent and reliable user experience. We delete all personally identifiable information from our logs after a period of time reasonably necessary to do so. We do not store any of the content of your text or voice communications in our logs.

Chankast what do you have agaisnt google? Google is an amazing company, they made the best search engine ever, imo gmail is also the best there is, pretty good features and an awsome search engine for the mails as well as 2.5GB of space. GoogleEarth is another master piece.

I don't have anything against google in fact I love their search function! ( however it's not as good as it once was, it has been unstable as of late with pages jumping between the top listing and 20th place within minutes :D)

Another reason I have to like google is the fact that we managed to get PR 1 there for a long time, which brought over 15k visitors to my site per day :D -> CASH :D

But the google toolbar, hard drive search function, and especially collecting information about people by reading personal emails to use for advertising is not things that I improve of.

voice chat is awesome. I was talking with one of my friends in town and his voice sounded better than most phone calls. Too bad the interface is so sparse, and the lack of any features other than easy-to-use voice chat is disappointing. But it's beta, so we can't expect too much.

And where did u read that they do that? Have you read they're privacy policy? They clearly state that no one reads your mail. If they would be violating the law and a company like google would be sued instantly. I also dunno what you mean by hard drive search function? oO is that something that comes with google toolbar? (i never used it)

they do analyze your e-mails for keywords that they'll use for advertisement, it's written on the EULA you agree when signing up for the gmail, the harddrive search thing is the google desktop search, it's like the macos x search function, theres a bar visible on the taskbar, type something there and it instantly shows related stuff.

and the google toolbar has the option to enable loggin of your searches and pages you access and how long you stay in that page, clicks, etc.

well, I didn't care about the intrusion and used all these tools, it's a matter of choice.

Yeah but no one "reads" your e-mail. Who cares if a computer is analizing them. They're privacy policy say that no human will read your emails
