Hello there folks,
finally I got a new PC that will be able to play this game

e8400 C2D
8800GT 512 MB
4 Gig RAM

Anyway native resolution on my PC is 1680x1050. What kind of settings should I use? I don't like playing windowed but fullscreen. I have Petes OGL2 plugin.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Stretching the game to fullscreen makes it look a bit garbled...

Does your display support switching to 4:3 automatically?

You pretty much have to learn to live with a distorted replication, or play windowed.

Playing widescreen is only half of what's bad enough. A 320x224 image upscaled to 1680x1050 isn't going to look too pretty no matter what you do. The 3D may look good though, but the tradeoff will be laughable 2D.

By the way, I doubt your old computer couldn't play the game, unless it was really, really old. My slowest computer I tried emulating the Playstation on was a Celeron 633MHz with 128MB RAM and a GeForce 4 MX440 (with Windows XP), and that played the game fine.

Had an old laptop :) P3 733 MHz with onboard GPU that shared memory with RAM. Don't get me started on it. Had a really tough period.

Anyway, I see that I'll have to be content with "keep aspect ratio" (black borders)

What I hope to improve are backgrounds. Prerendered background look pretty bad tbh. I've read here that I can use shaders, question is which ones :) And how to configure them?

Here is my current config:

Code:
Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.9
Author: Pete Bernert
Card vendor: NVIDIA Corporation
GFX card: GeForce 8800 GTS 512/PCI/SSE2

Resolution/Color:
- 1680x1050 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing
- Internal X resolution: 2
- Internal Y resolution: 3
- Keep psx aspect ratio: on
- No render-to-texture: Âo

- Filtering: 6
- Hi-Res textures: 2
- TexWin pixel shader: on
- VRam size: 512 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: on
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: Auto

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 1
- Framebuffer effects: 3
- Framebuffer uploads: 1

Misc:
- Scanlines: off
- Mdec filter: on
- Screen filtering: on
- Shader effects: 5/3
- Flicker-fix border size: 0
- GF4/XP crash fix: off
- Game fixes: off [00000000]
Also what settings would be nice for sprite heavy game like Xenogears?

I can't comment on that game, but if you want backdrops that don't look so pixelated and terrible, a texture level of 2 with hi resolution textures of 2 (stretched) is my favorite combination (along with fullscreen filtering and blurring shaders). A filtering of 4 does absolutely nothing for sprites or 2D stuff. That filters 3D only. A filtering of 2 filters it pretty mjuch to look more natural and normal. Granted, this level makes it blurry, but it'll have to be either that or pixelated (you simply can't get actual HD from an old 320x224 image, so it's one, the other, or some mix). I do run at 640x480 though, so if you use these same settings at such a higher resolution (1400x1050 if you stay native but in 4:3), it may not be quite as blurry for you.

Changed my 1080p rez to your rez to see if my setup looks good on your rez:

Code:
Plugin: Pete's OpenGL2 Driver 2.9
Author: Pete Bernert

Resolution/Color:
- 1680x1050 Fullscreen - NO desktop changing
- Internal X resolution: 1
- Internal Y resolution: 1
- Keep psx aspect ratio: off
- No render-to-texture: «

- Filtering: 0
- Hi-Res textures: 2
- TexWin pixel shader: on
- VRam size: 0 MBytes

Framerate:
- FPS limitation: off
- Frame skipping: off
- FPS limit: Auto

Compatibility:
- Offscreen drawing: 1
- Framebuffer effects: 3
- Framebuffer uploads: 2

Misc:
- Scanlines: on [128]
- Mdec filter: on
- Screen filtering: on
- Shader effects: 5/1
- Flicker-fix border size: 5
- GF4/XP crash fix: off
- Game fixes: on [00002003]

4xMSaL AA v2 Shaders

Balanced to make sure the background and lettering isn't pixelated while at the same time having the models still look decent (until better shaders are made).

Saw that the couple of posts above me were recent. So I figured this thread was recent. It's not hard to get it confused considered the lack of activity in certain places on this forum.

As for your common boastful opinion, nobody gives a sh t :p
