hey guys since my mom will be starting her online classes in january we will be getting a new pc in december but only from hsn or qvc because of easy pay.My mom seems dead set on a gateway one with btx at hsn since i definately don't want a dell since most of the ones at qvc don't have a dvd burner and the ones that do are way too expensive,

Weve gotten 2 gateway laptops from either QVC or HSN, cant recall which, and they havent been too horrible. The one im using right now weve had no problems with, we got a new one earlier this year and have yet to have problems but it came with a ungodly amount of crapware installed so that a minus. Not quite the same as a desktop I know, but I figure if there laptops are of fair quality there desktops will follow suit.

My friend's dad has a Gateway P4 BTX box that seems to be doing pretty well, and it's really quiet. It's just not the greatest with games but I blame the Radeon X300SE for that :p. I've used various models before as well and they don't seem to have an abnormal amount of problems compared to other name-brand computers. There was one new Gateway laptop I helped someone set up during the summer and it was really nice (high-res widescreen LCD, DVD burner, Centrino package, etc). The only problem was that the LCD had one dead pixel.

I would recommend reinstalling a clean version of windows so you'll get a huge performance boost since you won't have all that extra software that won't be used. I did that with my laptop (it's not a Gateway, but it came a lot of software that I don't use), and it now runs about twice as fast. I'm sure if you do that with the Gateway PC, you'll notice a similar speed boost (if you tweak windows as well).

Careful with your wording... I find it unlikely that your laptop actually runs twice as fast from removing vendor software, but I can easily believe that your laptop boots twice as fast from such an action (which I consider very important, don't get me wrong). In other words, I doubt games run faster by removing your vendor software (unless you were under 1G of RAM of course).

Ah, that's what I mostly meant, it boots much much faster. My mistake. :emb: Boot speed is very important, especially when you're running on the battery...the faster you get the system fully booted, the less battery life used up.

But I do get a big difference in overall performance (ok, maybe not twice as fast but it is a big jump). :p
