I had the same sort of problem much later in the game!
All I did was go back to the Memory card save I had from about 5 mins before, and it worked!
I'm not entirely sure what caused it because I finished off a boss, and hit F1 to save the state, and couldn't do anything! Don't know if the save state did it or not!
Do you have a Memory Card Save from a bit beforehand? I can give you my save file from around that area but Butz is named as me
