If you're looking for the next Wing Commander Privateer game you might want to give Freelancer a try.
Like Privateer you can trade items, take jobs, travel to different space stations, talk in bars, join different groups, upgrade your space ship, and sell your ship.
There a little more depth with the interface where you have a standing indicator of the different factions in the universe. The nav map is more depth as well where you can zoom in on different worlds, and get information on it.
The space fighting is from a third person prespective. I find that the interface is simplified a bit where you just have to point and click on ships and planets. From what I can tell there's no comm system to communicate with other ships. There's also no auto-pilot to cut down on the travel time.
I find that the ship designs isn't as good as the ones found in the Wing Commander games.
The job board missions are lacking where it's pretty much you have to kill x person. There are no cargo missions like in Privateer.
Freelancer is also more story driven than Privateer which takes alway some of the "open space sim" of the game. At the beginning of the game you have to take the first story mission in order to get a ship.
The music is okay and personally I would like subtitles with the speech.
Overall this is a good space game that comes very close to be the next Privateer.
