If you're looking for the next Wing Commander Privateer game you might want to give Freelancer a try.

Like Privateer you can trade items, take jobs, travel to different space stations, talk in bars, join different groups, upgrade your space ship, and sell your ship.

There a little more depth with the interface where you have a standing indicator of the different factions in the universe. The nav map is more depth as well where you can zoom in on different worlds, and get information on it.

The space fighting is from a third person prespective. I find that the interface is simplified a bit where you just have to point and click on ships and planets. From what I can tell there's no comm system to communicate with other ships. There's also no auto-pilot to cut down on the travel time.

I find that the ship designs isn't as good as the ones found in the Wing Commander games.

The job board missions are lacking where it's pretty much you have to kill x person. There are no cargo missions like in Privateer.

Freelancer is also more story driven than Privateer which takes alway some of the "open space sim" of the game. At the beginning of the game you have to take the first story mission in order to get a ship.

The music is okay and personally I would like subtitles with the speech.

Overall this is a good space game that comes very close to be the next Privateer.

This is not Star Wars, this is a flight simulator game!

Even with the Star Wars games like X-Wing don't you use a lightsaber!

Whoa, what a cool idea! They should make a star wars flight-sim game with lightsabers. Rock on! :duel:
this game is quite old... played this in LAN at school last semester.
RZetlin, i remember it having an auto-pilot (using the map IIRC correctly you could set a point to travel to)
maybe its only in the full version..

This game is only two years old.

There is a form of auto pilot when you go though the jump gates but you have to watch the whole sequence when you cruise through the warp tunnel.

In Privateer they just beginning scenes of the warp and auto piloting.
Yes, there's an autopilot, but not in the "select a planet/system and take the fastest route" autopilot. The Freelancer_Demo_22 jpg shows the system map, anywhere you click on that map it places a marker that you can lock on and either dock or fly to. I'm sure you could pick a spot anywhere in the games universe and "fly to" that, it might do the fastest route type autopilot. Never really used that so I don't know.

It is a good game though. After that first mission you can do whatever you want. I think you might have to be about halfway thru the game to be able to go anywhere though. The story isn't too bad. The Nomads (the aliens that are taking over) kinda look like those aliens in Stargate:SG1.

And the mod community isn't that bad. Granted it's nowhere near as big as other mainstream titles, it does have some interesting stuff and even a mod-manager. I think there are some conversions out for the various space shows like Deep Space Nine. There are other ships to download, better weapons, more planets and universes.

Just when I thought my attempt to make this thread go off-topic had failed, Kane chimes in. :thumb:
