My tv tuner has really bad encoding software included. I checked a guide and found virtualvcr and it's reccomended to encode the input in an uncompressed way and then compress it to divx or mpeg. I have Tmpegnc plus to compress the uncompressed file to mpeg2 but i don't have a big HD and i won't be getting one soon so...

Is there a good program that can compress in real time to mpeg2? (Freeware, please)

Not really. Vdub can do it with the correct codecs... BUT encoding to ANYTHING other than uncompressed or a lossless codec, in real time , is virtually useless. No software codec can do it fast enough. The general rule is the more compressed the longer it takes...which is why real time divx encoding isn't even attempted....any extra things like resizing, etc...will slow it even more...That was the main reason i dumped my normal capture card and got a Wintv pvr-250 Hardware mpeg2 encoder card....the compression is done in hardware so even a slow PC can do it...
descaler doesn't capture full screen though, it is only 1/2 vertical resolution, which for me, is unacceptable....
