There is something relatively simple you can do to get rid of most skipping and CD-ROM troubles. What you need to do is use an ISO creator such as BlindRead 3.0 (do a search for it if you don't know where to get it), and copy your PSX game CD as an ISO image onto your hard drive, then run from ISO instead of CD-ROM. Load times will be a tad faster as well. It takes up a lot of room, but it's worth it IMO, I got rid of nearly all sound skipping in the games I've tried it with.

o.t. I picked up a PSX to PC USB adapter- it kicks much arse. No more playing emulated games on a keyboard for me. =-)
