Hello everyone,

My ff8 seems to freeze at specific spots in the game (the music keeps playing but the screen either goes black or freezes). Here are a few examples:

[disc 1]
- after running away from the spider-like robot during the SeeD test
- while crossing the bridge-like structure as Laguna (the place with all the Esthar soldiers)
[disc2]
- after completing the first battle on this disc (the monsters you encounter when you leave the house to get to the pub)

I have tried epsxe 1.6, 1.5.2, and followed this guide: http://www.lordkane.co.uk/ff8.php, and also several other plugin combinations, all give the same results. I am using linux.

I own the original game, and at first i thought the cd might have been scratched so I downloaded a memory card with ff8 saves on it and skipped the parts that were freezing. When I got to disc2 and I experienced another freeze, I decided to post on these forums to see if anyone was having the same problem (almost no scratches on this disc).

Any ideas?

Forgot to list my system specs:

I would suspect that your cd-rom drive spins down and refuses to power up.

OR

It has failed reading a few times on that particular sector.
You wouldn't be able to tell whether a disc is bad by looking on its back. Therefore, try creating images for the discs and run them.

I have a similar prob. with FF7... well rather I HAD it while I was using the disk.
After a battle or while entering another room, the screen fades to black, and the sound slows down a bit, and the screen stays black.
Anyway, I burned the ISO and I don't have that problem anymore... It's probably the CD drive... I have an LG8523B CDRW

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I made a cd image using clonecd and it's working fine now :). I also stopped using saved states. I had some trouble with save states and Metal Gear Solid, so I decided to stick with normal memory card saves in ff8. Not sure if it helped or not... Whatever works :p.

Yes. Savestates are recommanded not to be used unless you are absolutly sure that there is no data transmission between the PC and the CD/Image.

In this way, you will not RISK corrupting the savestate.

Savestates has a werid effect on MGS. I don't know why, but avoid using them.
