Have you tried playing the DVD on your standalone player?

Try it and see if it works, if not it is quite possible that the DVD disc itself is corrupt/damaged and you will need to get it exchanged for a new copy.

Well before attempting a firmware alteration of your DVD Drive I would try just two more things.

1) Use a lense cleaner on the DVD drive, it could be that a build up of dust is stopping the disc from being recognised.

2) Clean the disc. PC DVD drives are a lot more picky about playing dvds that have dirt on them than a standalone DVD player. It could just be that this disc has a speak of dust in the wrong place.

Both of those things in the past have stopped me from using a disc in my DVD drive, even though others worked fine. A quick clean is all that you might need.
