backing up your dvds:
get a hold of DVD Decrypter. its pretty easy to follow. it will copy all the data to your hard drive (its capable of copying "copy protected" discs).
get nero recode 2, and import the folder you copied the dvd to.
youll lose little quality if you use a 4.7gb dvds
youll lose NO quality if you can find DL 8.5 gb dvds
