This is to know what your DVD drive is set to:

Go to My Computer, Right-Click your DVD Drive and go to Properties.
In the Hardware tab, select your DVD drive and click Properties.
Now go to the DVD Region tab. It should tell you what region it is set to.

normaly it should be set to Region 1. Japan is Region 2.

Note: seems you can change the region a limited number of times....i actually didnt know that :S

Have you tried playing the DVD on your standalone player?

Try it and see if it works, if not it is quite possible that the DVD disc itself is corrupt/damaged and you will need to get it exchanged for a new copy.

I had the same problem, but i tried watching on my sony home DVD, witch is Region 0 (brazil).
Just borrowed my cousins, witch accept all region DVD´s.

When windows says: dvd unformat or can not used under windows then it's not recognized by the drive. If by clicking on my pc you can see the label of the disc near the dvd-rom drive (something like Advent_Children) then it's the region code.
You can unlock your drive if that's the case, looks for a Rpc for your model at www.thefirmwarepage.com. Tnen you will need to unlock powerdvd or the program of your choice with i.e. dvd genie.

Why don't you give AnyDVD a shot? It should eliminate the region lockout problem altogether.
