Well, the simple way of explaining is: the background is composed by sprites, while the characters are 3D. You can make the background look better by setting bilinear filtering to Enabled, but you'll see some failures, since the sprites were not made for bilinear filtering. FSAA also helps a lot.

Enable 2xFSAA in your 3dfx voodoo tools.. This should help a little with the pixelated backgrounds.. But the best is 4xFSAA which sorely the voodoo 4 can't do.. Only the voodoo 5 can do 4xFSAA in vooodoo cards..

Here is a shot of some 2d background with 4xFSAA enabled using a voodoo 5 5500 agp, 640x480 resolution, filteriing without sprites...

I am having the same problem... but I don't have a Voodoo or a fsaa card. I use pete 's d3d plugin and I don't see a way to enable bilinear filtering. Is there anyway to make the backgrounds look decent?

Perhaps.. you should read my post on here .

They are the same rite?

its like i said before, 2d filtering is dodgy, you either have it smooth with glitches or pixalated but clear.
ya, I got the point now. If I want good 2D I must have bad 3D graphic(with pete's soft) and vice versa...
