FF9 Swirl with different plug-ins?

2077 Views 15 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Sangu|ne
I was just reading about Gohan's problems with getting that wonderful swirly effect "just" before a battle scene in FF9... and i was wondering if anyone knew how to fix/get that swirly effect on any other video plug-ins other than Pete's... the fix to Pete's was to enable Vram... I'm using Lewpy's Glide, for my Voodoo 5 board. What happens to me is the same thing that happened to Gohan (his thread is labelled ff9 help). Instead of the swirl effect, my screen just goes black.. and sloooowwwly fades into the battle scene... the sound hiccuping the entire time.
Can anyone help me please?

Unfortunately, Lewpy's really doesn't do too well in the swirly department. If swirlies are the major deciding factor in your GPU-choosing, go with Pete's D3D. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, but them's the facts ;)
Actually the facts are that lewpys pluggin can do the swirl effects just as good at Petes pluggins.. They run full speed with no slowdown on my comp.. Check these screens...
here is another one of the swirl effect on FF9 using lewpys glide pluggin.. My system specs are in my profile..
here is my config for lewpys glide pluggin.. Try running the game off an iso as it will help with the hiccups you get when a fight scene loads..

Remember that this setting is for optimal graphic effects.. It may be slow on your system.. If it is then set:

FrameBuffer Access to "write"
Off-Screen Drawing to "extra+FBr"

You will still get the swirl effects.. Lewpys glide pluggin should run faster for you since you got a Voodoo 5 like me.. By the way, did you know that all of this is detailed in the readme that comes with lewpys glide pluggin.. Time to do some reading dude.. Or click on the "explain setting" button in lewpys glide pluggin config window..
I play the game from the cd drive not as an iso.. Its still fast..

Hi Fivefeet8... thanks for the reply... I'm trying your settings... but haven't reached a battle scene yet... but I'm sure it will work. Also... as for your comment for me to "read up" ... I actually did. That's where I got my settings from in the first place. Half your settings are actually completely different than what the Lewpy's Glide settings told me to do... and I also *did* use the "read about this" button, but half of it doesn't make a terrible lot of sense to me anyhow. Thank you for your help.
Hey no problem dude.. Oh and thanks for reading all the docs first.. You are one of the few who actually do.. So how did it go.. Did the swirls work?
Yes... the swirls now work!! YES. thank you... only problem... seems my computer is too slow to handle all the... ermm.. modifications I've made to the video configuration... I.. unlike you... have only a lowly P3 667... with a whole lot of RAM... don't know what's slowing it down (yes... even when I changed the two options to the alternates like you said).
You know the scenes where you're running through the air cab stations (in Lindblum, on the first disc)... everything... including the music, suddenly slows down to slo-mo... kinda funny... but odd. I'm playing off the original discs too... not backups... so it can't be because of a bad burn.
Oh... and as for me reading the docs... well... you see... part of it comes from being female... we usually *do* "RTFM"... ;) Thanks again for the swirls...
Sorry I called you a "dude".. hehe.. Most people on this board is Male.. You are probably of a unique few females who actually plays games and is into emulation too.. :) I remember a post where it asked for the female population on this board.. So the population so far seems to be 1 female and about 3000 males.. Unless you know some more females who wonder about these boards.. Unknown to us males..

For your slowdowns during the Limblum scenes.. You can always just press delete while playing that part of the game and change those two options...

Oooh, ooh!! another emu chik! HELL YEAH!!!:D :D :D
How interesting... how the word "female" suddenly attracts new responses. :p J/K. 5'8" (aka: fivefeet8)... I don't know of any other emu-fan females... especially ones who play rpg's... I know ONE other one that plays rpgs (no emulators for her though)... but she's engaged. So sorry. <grin> And what I meant to say in my last reply... pardon my bungled english... is that I *did* switch the two options you suggested so that my computer wouldn't slow down so much... and they *did* help... it's just... I'm still going reeeeally slowly sometimes. Thanks again for all your help... much appreciated (although... I probably *should* get back to studying for my midterm). Happy gaming! ;)
Please post the exact config you use to play FF9 (ie. setup/play the game, then use the COPY INFO button once all settings are how you normally play the game).
Normal causes of slowdown are either framebuffer read access (setting FBA to READ or READ/WRITE, or OSD to EXTRA+FBR) or heavy off-screen drawing (OSD to EXTRA or FULL). Unfortunately, you need some of these settings to get some of the effects: what one hand gives, the other takes away.
Personally, I would sacrifice the swirly-effect to get good speed elsewhere, but that is just my personal preference :)
Lewpy:
Wow... the author him/herself, eh? Sweet!! :) well... the way I normally play FF9 is using the settings *exactly* as they're told to me via the Lewpy's Glide configuration document (also when I press that little button that says "explain setting" and at the bottom it says "Recommended: off" or whatever... that's what I put... because they're the same as the document).

The settings that are on there NOW... are the exact settings as fivefeet8 has posted them a few messages prior to this one (save that I used the alternate settings he mentions below his own... meaning that the OSD is set to extra+FBr, and the FrameBuffer access is set to "write".

Yes.. I also understand the whole... sacrificing one to get the other... I shall see how much I enjoy the swirls... :D
Yes, I do try to keep an eye on these boards, and I am a "he" btw!
Hopefully, everything should tie up in my recommendations, so the document should tally with the Explain Setting which should also tally with the SET DEFAULT button. But remember this is a "generic" recommendation, and some games may require certain settings enabled/disabled/changed to get them to work properly.
As to RTFM'ing, remember to check back through my history log, as I do make more specific comments in there to new features and how they may be used in certain games. Such as when I released v1.33, I noted
For FF9, try - FBA=WRITE, OSD=Extra+FBR. This is the best compromise, with swirly effect on entering a battle, and full recursive textured spell effects, but it does slow down battle FPS when those effects are active.
There are some "Gems Of Truth" in there ;)
hahah.. thanks... I'm just a nimrod. :) probably slipped my mind... as I was trying these things after I'd just written a midterm... must not let my eyes dry out like that next time... yes.. new contacts are definitely in order. Thanks again Mr. Lewpy... and of course... 5'8".
