FF9 Problem

Everything in it as far as I know is running fine, my only problem is in the field screens (the normal walking around ones and not the map ones) when I press triangle nothing happens, while in the manual it says it should bring up the main menu (which would help a lot sometimes). Is the manual wrong or is it the emulator, and how can ui fix it if it is (note in the map screen it works fine). I am using the built in controller plugin.
