FF8 problem

Let me start off by saying thank you to all random posters on these forums, I wouldn't have known where to have started without lurking for a while.

Anyway, I'm playing FF8 with the original PSX discs, everything seems to run fine until I get into a battle. I can't for the life of me get the battle options to display. I can use the options but the box doesn't show on my screen.

I'm running on a 2.4 Pentium 4, Geforce4 DDR 64 MB.

ePSXe SPU core 1.5.2
ePSXe CDR WNT/W2K core 1.5.2
