Its PS3 vs Xbox.

the Xbox will have lower quality textures, which is why that there is actually less detail in the 2nd pictures.

Remembering, the Xbox has to be able to hold the textures on 1 or 2 dvd's, while the PS3 has an entire BD to store them on

i wish ffxiii was coming to the pc.

the PC has the potential for the greatest graphics since its always evolving, whereas the PS3/xbox 360 will always have fixed hardware for compatibility reasons.

furthermore, its alot easier to port a xbox 360 game to pc, than a ps3 game to xbox 360.
IF FFXIII were coming to PC. i would prefer it to be ported from the PS3.

What? Textures don't take up that kind of space man. FMV and Audio do. I have no idea where you got that xbox will have lower quality textures because its not using BD. Because its not true at all. lol
fat lot you know about textures then.

Enough to know that the difference between dvd and BD doesn't determine texture size. If games didn't contain high quality amounts of FMV and Audio/Voices then they wouldn't be to large. According to what you are saying though, BD capacity> Graphical Hardware. Let hope Nvidia stops making graphic cards on PC and start making BD drives so that we all can see super detailed textures.

as i said, Fat lot you know about texture size.

I had just typed out the exact same reasoning as Ramadear, I too find it highly unlikely that disc space is the limiting factor. Unless the PS3 has some magical compression ratio that would beat the X360 they still have roughly the same amount of memory available. I doubt the size of individual textures has a difference that huge that it would justify Bluray.

maybe on a pc that would be the case but the PS3 streams textures in real time. Only what is shown on screen at the present time is kept in memory.

to debunk that also another reason on why the vid ram is less on the ps3 is cause it has dedicated cores from the cells rather then useing ram which can produce better texture then the 360
(plz do ur math^^) if u ask me id rather have a CPU making the textures then the ram (can get faster FPS v-sync etc with all good performance) rather then struggling with just a GPU and 512 ram, and if u look at my sig i own all the systems soo im not picking sides i just read up on the systems before i buy them
Stop posting, you clearly have no idea about what you are talking about.

no i said more or less it uses the other cores to help produce faster and better textures even tho it only has a 256 mb card which theoreticaly can produce better then 360
like i said, you have no idea.

Textures are NOT produced, they pre-exist.
Ram is required regardless of the cpu to store textures in.

the CPU/GPU is used in tandem to apply the textures to models, and apply post processing to those textures.

.......no, its slow because of unoptimised shader code.....

the game can be sped up simply be overclocking the shaders.

People are overestimating the PS3, there's nothing you can do about a shortage of video memory. I looked at the FFXIII screenshots and in terms of textures I have seen nothing, but really nothing groundbreaking.

Maybe I'm picking wrong examples, but even MGS4 has its fair share of bad textures:
First batch

Characters look great, the world just suffers from lack of video memory. But well, memory is expensive, or at least easy to cut costs on, so it will always be the achilles' heel of consoles, just like we saw in the previous generation. But well, it really depends on the developers, Kojima Studios did quite a good way to cover it up, as long as you don't force people to look at the aspects that got low-res textures you're fine.
There is actually.
Most games just push all textures into ram, even if they aren't needed at that time.

Console games are optimised to flush the data they don't need and only load that which it does as it appears on screen.

thats one of the best things about streaming data from a disk, you can tell exactly what you need and don't need at any given time.

FMVs aren't cheap to make either, so I think 50GB will be the most a PS3 game would ever need.
They are when you not only have your own CG Teams, but also your own CG Software, to do it with :p
