Personally I was leaning towards the theory of the similar debacle which happened with Killzone 2, using video and passing it off as realtime gameplay.

I still remember the original FF8 North America commercial. Not a single gameplay shot was present in the entire video. It was all FMVs. My sister remarked how great the graphics were and that she was interested in playing it. I interjected that it wasn't the type of game that she would actually like.

I'm not sure about other countries, but now that I really think about it, were there ever any Squaresoft commercials that featured actual gameplay other than a few intermittent split-seconds followed by a bunch of FMVs?

The only one I remember is Qarl's texture pack III. There are others, but that one is often considered the best.

Not even that. 1.7GB is all. The file is heavily compressed and I don't know for sure if the textures are compressed (DXTC) or uncompressed.

Don't forget that MGS4 uses padding on every file.
