FF XIII...gameplay not as advertised?

The difference doesn't take a hawkeye to notice.

Of course, speculation and opinions have been thrown around now.

I'm kinda leaning towards the "One is PS3, other is 360" argument.

Let the discussion begin...and please, no PS3 vs 360 wars, we've had enough of that this past week.

Personally I was leaning towards the theory of the similar debacle which happened with Killzone 2, using video and passing it off as realtime gameplay.
the first two pictures, one is in a different city
I lean for nonrealtime videos for promotion. There are visible poligons in the second versions of each pic (see chest area in the first and second).
If thats so, such misrepresented promotional use of supposed ingame streams wouldnt have been very honest.

The less complex textures in some of the second shots would tend to support the possibility of them being optimized for lower media storage than what bluray offers, btw.

I still remember the original FF8 North America commercial. Not a single gameplay shot was present in the entire video. It was all FMVs. My sister remarked how great the graphics were and that she was interested in playing it. I interjected that it wasn't the type of game that she would actually like.

I'm not sure about other countries, but now that I really think about it, were there ever any Squaresoft commercials that featured actual gameplay other than a few intermittent split-seconds followed by a bunch of FMVs?

Well it's not just that.

The second one looks...a bit less natural then the first. It just looks overall a bit rougher.

And the third and fourth one. Definitely less detail on the hair and clothes in the fourth one compared to the third.
It's probably CGI vs Real-Time, if not that i will go with 360 version looks worse argument... just kidding X-boys i really have no idea.

I really hope that's the case to be honest. I like my 360, but people (mostly rabid 360 fanboys) need to be shown that Bluray has its advantages.

The weird thing is that there's no need for that. If it works properly on one system, and not on the other, why should you need to downgrade it on the first one? It's not like they made Dreamcast games look like their PS2 ports. I remember reading that it was common to make good textures and then they would downscale them to the appropriate size, depending on the system. Why not use the original HQ ones for PS3 and use downsized for other systems?

But well, it was probably just a render target then, the differences aren't too big still, let's just hope it will be a smooth 60fps game with nice AA.
Its PS3 vs Xbox.

the Xbox will have lower quality textures, which is why that there is actually less detail in the 2nd pictures.

Remembering, the Xbox has to be able to hold the textures on 1 or 2 dvd's, while the PS3 has an entire BD to store them on
all i want from FF XIII other than the gameplay is an option to choose between the old and new fighting style because i hate the new one.... sadly i doubt they will do that.

about the PS3 VS 360 thing.... i think is pointless to discuss about it.. both machines have advantages and dissadvantages. the PS3 may be slightly superior than the 360 eventhough the 360 doesn´t suffer from low frame rate problems or buggy games... in my case i love both my PS3 and 360 but i would prefer to play MGS4 on my 360 even if i need 4 discs and not watch a damn installation everytime.... and not to mention that if you want to play a savestate from a old mission you´re faced with a new install and the same happens if you want to load another one.

The Blu-ray is awesome when it comes to capacity but in speeds is still too pre-mature if you ask me... i think MS did the wise-choice this time and opted to use DVDs... the reason why the PS3 failed is not the blu-ray but the idea of pushing a new format using a console... they were lucky with the PS2 but this time i think Sony is out of luck.

^ They are not the only ones that pushed bD to the market, there is Toshiba and other
Japanese companies and even Warner Brothers dropped support for HD-DVDs..
at the end of this battle "HD-DVD vs blu-Ray" the winner was Sony. that is a fact.
Hmmm.

It depends from what I've read about the differences in discs. MGS4 uses a double layer Bluray, no? They would've undoubtedly used dual layered DVDs if they ported it, and the 360 restricts dual layer read speeds to 8x, down from 12x, which is a good chunk of speed lost. Most 360 games use dual layer DVDs now if I remember right.

Also, unlike the DVD system, Bluray maintains a constant velocity, so it doesn't lose speed when reading on the second layer or going towards the inner layers. The inner rings of dual layer DVDs could go all the way down to 5x I read...

The PS3 has a 2x Bluray drive, that's the main problem. If it had at least a 4x, it would've crushed the 360 in terms of read speed. So I agree with you there @ruantec...to a degree. I don't think it's a complete failure, cause when compared to DVDs, it has it's ups and downs.

I'm really hoping someone puts up a guide to replace the drive with faster one...wouldn't mind opening my PS3 and voiding the warranty for that. I avoid loading times if I could :p

~hits skore for failing at computers~

skektek's Blog: Blu-ray vs 12x DVD: read speed

Bluray 2x i as fast as DVD 8x
Bluray 4x pwns DVD 12x
I thought that's basically what I said... oO

I guess I could've worded and put it together a bit better, but I'm kinda half asleep right now...and on that note, g'nights!

I'm off to go window shopping for a new TV tomorrow <3
Make sure you get the deluxe transformer edition.

...you never know when you'll need your tv to fight off a burglar.
The second shots look a little bit desaturated, mostly on the hair.

I don't have enough money for that :(

So i'm still using this:

hmm.... let me upgrade the chain cannnon to a pulse cannon.
well i don´t think the Blu-Ray format failed... quite the opossite it won the battle against HD-DVD but what i mean is that the PS3 failed because of it actually... the drive is slow as hell which is normal in first generation devices and therefore devs are dissapointed on how things works not to mention how high the production costs is... i know Sony has done a great job by cutting prices and production costs but eventhough they´ve lost a lot of money because of that.

if the a blu-ray drive were planned for the PS4 i would say "Success" because untill that drives would get fast and more accurate and so eliminate many problems people are having nowdays with there PS3 such as 22 minutes installations in games like Devil May Cry 4 which to me isn´t acceptable.

another point regardless of what others may think... i think Piracy help in some way... of course Piracy isn´t good for any console/device but in the case of consoles it helps with hardware sales a lot.. the reason for that is because we´re living in a world full of problems and in many countries people just don´t have the money to pay for expensive games and because of that people keep modding there devices in order to play there games in a cheap way. so what options do they have???? Xbox 360 or Wii.

this practice is bad as game developers lose a lot of money but i think its there own fault... companies around the world(my opinion) just think in the big "Cash" rather than quality games.... for example look at the Final Fantasy series... even if the games got pirated millions of times there are a lot of people(like me) that still buy the real thing as we all love the game and so we pay for the hard work of the developers... and thats something great because just as a game developer once said "am not afraid about piracy nor have nothing against it.. i think companies need to create more quality games in order to solve the problem" and to be honest i fully agree with him.
