Resident Evil and me. Older members here will know the connection. :)
WHen RE4 was first announced back in 2001-02 for PS2 and RECVX had been just released on it, this was a reason in itself alone (for me at least) to get a PS2. As soon as I got my PS2 and wasn't even through with RE CVX, a heart breaking news came to me: RE is gonna be GC exclusive. I think RE4 got canned and its development on the PS2 changed into Devil May Cry which became a super hit. However, I dived into the Silent Hill series to keep me busy....with an infamous signature, "GC has RE, PS2 has everything else!" heh.

And this year.....my dreams came true. RE4 announced for PS2 !!!! And maaaaaaaaan, I was damn eager to play it. Reading its GC reviews and listening to ppl's comments about how good it is, I was really really anxious to get my hands on it, and as soon as it is released...I bought it, I played and am through it. And now wanna share a piece of my mind on it. Remember, I am one of those unlucky ppl who haven't seen the GC version directly and video files don't do justice to graphics.

Presentation: 9/10
I always prefer realtime cutscenes in a game, no matter how much they suck in looks...they don't disrupt an over all flow. RE4 on GC had all realtime cutscenes with PS2 using pre-rendered FMVs. Though difference between realtime grpahics and pre-rendered clips isn't too much, its noticeable in some scenes with a dramatic change in lightning and particle effects. But this is really really negligible. The direction of scenes, the way the story unfolds, the characters and their voices.....the moves that characters perform in those cutscenes and short quick reflex sequences......I loved it. Seriously, I really liked all the animations, the art styles, the direction and the story telling. Remarkable. For comparision, I would give MGS3 9.5 in this category and DMC3 an 8.8. Improvements can be made on capitalizing some emotional scenes rather than one person just simply shouting the dying or leaving persons name in a long painful manner :p
The borrowed elements were quite evident too, specially that radio thing had MGS written all over it. The hallway with lasers = RE the movie. The interactive cutscenes, well....you can call them as something from Shenmue, it is becoming more of a trend these days and rightly so. I saw it in fahrenheit, whole game was based on it. I got a number of retries, not because I have bad reflexes or suck at aiming, but because when a cutscene came I leaned back to enjoy them and then the screen flashed a button combination, and then Leon died horribly :p

Story: 9/10
The story is nowhere near the class of MGS or FFX ... but its in the league of DMC3 and this means its more than cool. The story in itself is not really a biggie, but the way its being told and the characters. May be because I'm an RE fanboy and seeing ol' characters in new roles gets me really really excited, but I enjoyed the plot and now the "Seperate Ways" side story (which is absent in GC) too is making it even more enjoyable. Absence of SW is really really worth noticing, I tell ya. GC guys, rent the PS2 version and play this set of missions. Its freakin enjoyable. It has got its own set of FMVs that go in parallel with Leon's story and give the insight on the main story through another perspective. Its great.

For an overall RE universe, their can be more interesting plots that we can see in future games. Wesker's idea of recreation of Umbrella Corp, him having access to these master plagus sample (and Steve from RECVX with the Veronica Virus and samples of T virus too within himeslf...so its gonna be cool :p). Then where'd Leon go after RE4, how is Ada going with her own mission. Then the Redfield family and its been long since we heard from Jill and Carlos too. So when an RE game is coming, its bound to have an interesting plot connecting somehow to previous plots. So quite a potential in this category.

Gameplay: 9.8/10
Ppl find these kinds of game as clunky and awkward to play but I really really enjoy such games. RE4 shows a lot of promise for future RE games. The gameplay in itself is quite simple really. You can aim and shoot and use your knife. You can use an action button where ever the game tells you to and perform vareity of things - Dodging, Opening doors, picking items, opening doors, Kick someone, giving a german suplex and flipping to your legs, climbing ladders and the list goes on and on. The real gameplay elements is using the environment to your advantage. For example, in the village scene, I was there in the middle of a small town with some houses, a barn, a tower and open spaces with back alleys. Dozens of villagers coming after me. I have limited ammo and it doesn't do any significant damange unless I get an aim for a headshot. But so many coming after me, I decided to run and find a safe spot. So I climbed the tower and camped there like I would have in CS waiting for a head to appear in the stairs so that I can get a cheap headshot. After a while I smelt something burnings and realized it was me! They were throwing molotov bottles upto the tower to flank me out!!!! I jumped, ran into the nearest house, slammed the door, moved a table to shut it completely and slided a cupboard to block the window. Found a shotgun :D Banged and the the bullets went through the door even damaging it! So this "Survival Tension" continued till the bell rang (literally) and Leon was left in a deserted village. This was just a prologue, a sample of what's to come.

There are similar run and gun sequences, sniping areas and other mini games like escaping a rolling giant rock on your back. It has some very cool puzzles in it as well, I speacially liked the rolling crystall ball with a 3D symbol in it which had to be properly rotated to get the right 2D symbol.

The boss fights are quite varied and noteworthy too. Really really enjoyable. You CAN get away with a couple of them at least, without even killing the boss! its more like your trapped in an XYZ location....something is coming after you, you can use your environment to buy time and find the proper tools/keys necessary to escape the situation. Or you can be a RAMBO and kill the boss. Heh, suit your style ;) A memorable encounter was where hundreds of villagers start to converge on a single house where you're trapped. You have to avoid them till a particular time or activity. Something more like that scene in that movie "Night of the Living Dead" but far more interesting and enjoyable! The enemies have a sweet variety to them too and their diversity are quite satisfactory.

The gameplay can be improved of course, despite of being so awesome. Interactivity should be increased and more futile possibilties should be added (like sitting on a chair and saying, I don't have time to sit :p ) Mostly is that anything that allows interaction NEEDS to be interacted with. No extras. That shouldn't be. The "Using the environment to your advantage" can and must also be improved. Instead of adding just blowable barrels and hiding/vantage points, there should be interacting gattlings guns. So interactive electric cables that you can shoot and will fall on the enemies frying them to toast (yummy). There was a part in Half Life2 where you switched on gas and then ignited electricity to kill the zombies. Something more in those lines. Everything should be interactive. There should be strafing and some manual dodges that you can perform yourself at your will. The Gameplay is this game's STRONGEST point IMO.

Graphics 8.8/10
They say that its the prettiest looking game on GC. This definitly means that this game has suffered greatly in its transition to PS2. Comparatively, I gave MGS3 9.5 and Silent Hill3 9.7 in the graphics department and besides GT series, I think those too are fantastic looking games. I have inserted in Shadow of Colussus too and it looks quite brilliant too, but I felt it chugging and it had an annoying framerate. However, leave that. RE4 has very very very decent visuals, mind you. The low score may be because of its timeline of its release. SH3 now would manage around 9.2 from me and MGS3 will get a simple 9. This 8.8 comes from someone who has played Through Half Life2, Doom3, Quake4, AOE3 at MAX DETAILS 1024x768 2xFSAA 4xAF and have ran CoR EFBB and FEAR. It has good visuals, a very steady framerate...I experienced NO SLOWDOWNS. The textures were mostly ugly, jaggies weren't all that noticeable to me, and the lightning and shadows was just average. I am comparing it to SH3 basically. I find it really good looking. Plus MGS3's ALL REALTIME cutscenes are quite extraordinary too. The facial expressions and movements in SH3 is the best I've seen on PS2. Anyways, I think this would be much better on GC and I might pick up a GC none the less. I am now eager for RE0 and RE remake as well.

Sound 8/10
Weakest aspect of this game I say. It sounds like I am watching some 1970 movie on a VHS. May be its 'cos I have my PS2 hooked upto ordinary stereo speakers and the EAX 5.1 audio on my PC games have spoiled me....but I'll write what I experienced here. Sound felt kind of suppressed in this game. Music is pretty average too. Voice acting is pretty strong though and the sound fx aren't bad either. If anyone has played it on Pro Logic II then correct me.

Replayablity: 9/10
It took me around 20 hours in the first run and not even a single second of these 20 hours was anywhere near boring or with a sigh sound. I managed 38 retries thanks to the reflex cutscenes. The game is quite challenging too, the enemy AI is really agressive and you'll enjoy playing it and engaging the enemies in different manners. You'll keep coming back to this game, if not the main game then the mercenary mode or those ada's assigments. Then comes the big thing - Seperate ways. I am currently on mission 4 and already a 2 hour playtime into it. I'll definitly play through all of the main game again...and I am thinking about doing it on the GC version. Yeah, RE rocks. Finest game I've played this year.

overall: 9 (rounded up 8.93 due to user tilt)
Well, not a very high score even though its an awesome game. The graphics and sound held it back and this means that the GC version would score higher and some points less in the replayability. Which version to play? Simple. If you have a GC, play it on GC and rent the PS2 version for the extra stuff. If you have a PS2, then play it on the PS2 of course....you won't be missing much of the experience. However, if you do have some cash lying around then get a GC and wait for RE4 to hit its lowest price and then buy it.

For those who have not played RE4 as of yet......you guys are missing one of the finest gaming experiences in a long time. Go play it, it rocks.

And well, this marks the start of the F.G.R 05-06. Other titles that are to be reviewed include Fahrenheit, Quake4, FEAR, AOE3, Shadow of Colussus, etc. But my exams starting from next week, so this F.G.M would last pretty long. Oh and in case you all forgot what F.G.M meant: Fawad's Gaming Mania and F.G.R = Fawad's Gaming Reviews. Its been quite sometime since I posted my gaming mania reviews :)

*goes back to play Seperate Ways mission 4*

I am currently playing RE4 on the PS2, this the game is very difficult, I hate escorting ashly as she gets killed or captured execsively easily but otherwise the game is pretty good, the cutscenes are mostly video files instead of being rendered real time like in the gamecube version

Nice read :thumb:

But if you consider a 9 not to be such a high score... I consider a game getting an 8 when it's a solid game, a good one. A game that's really special will be getting a 9, and a 10 will only be given to a few rare gems. This is also something that bothers me with certain websites giving games only 9s and higher :p

I was waiting for this. I always knew that a Syed review was on its way. ;)

Thanks. That was really informative. Seems like another must buy RE game [after survivor(poor),dead aim (average) & outbreak (almost good) disasters].

Syed I've played RE4 (PS2) using dobly pro logic 2 and it sounds great, but the sound effects and some scenes are a bit muffled due to a bit of audio compression. (You can blame that on the tiny GC mini dvd's :p)

also I beat RE4 in 3 hours since I've already played it on GC, but on professional mode.... it took me a loooooong time. :p

This game rocks. I too switched over to the SH series for a while until I could get a good RE fix since RE:CV. I beat it the other day and it was challenging but not to the point that I didnt want to play it any more. I thought I had a few more chapters to go but before I knew it, I beat the game. The ending of RE4 sucked though, very similar to the very boring and unsatifying ending of RE2. It didnt go into detail like you would want to see in an ending. I think the best endings in RE games would have to be RE3 and Outbreak 1(even though that game sucked). It's kinda repetitious in a good way also (like when you would accomplish something and hordes of Ganados would surround you, but I always love these parts). The mercenaries is an awesome extra but I keep thinking that all of the stages in the mercenaries levels would be perfect for multiplayer gameplay. I wonder why Capcom didnt go a little further and add a multiplayer support for the mercenaries levels, that woulve been fun. They could have also added a stage select feature as well so I could let my friends play some of my favorite parts of the game (like when the Ganados surrounded the house with Sera, or the trolly car part). I dont know why the cutscenes werent made in real time, SH 3 pulled off some beautiful RT cutscenes on the PS2 so I dont know why RE4 couldnt do the same. But besides the little quirks, RE4 had to be the funnest game that I have played for the PS2 to date IMO.

I was so busy with playing RE4 that I didn't have time to make screenshots and post a thread with them here :D anyway game is good, if you ask me - the easiest one, it took me about 15 hrs to complete the main game, 3 hrs and a little for separate ways, the merceneries - I've got all characters unlocked, but got little bored to get 5 stars for each of them, anyway what's left for me is the mini game with Ada in which she has to gather those 5 samples of la plague (dunno if that's spelled correct :p), what makes me bit angry? Those FMV instead of RT CGI... but that's common thing, that capcom has to show a bit of lameness :p. Any one else noticed simmilarity of RE2 and RE4 (story and rest)? Now let's wait for ports of RE 1R and RE 0

Hmm, GC version didn have to hold the prerendered FMVs as well...... and still?
Only 3 hours!? That's TOO quick man!

And I have died or failed 26 times and I just arrived in the castle scene, I suck at games where they limit your range of movements
That's pretty much every game :p
If I am not wrong, then reaching castle is nearly 50% of the game. A word of advice, you don't have to kill everyone. Just "survive".

Best game ive bought all year.
Indeed, best game since Devil May Cry 3. But I just started up with CoD2 and am having a great time. So let's see. I have around 8 qulaity titles lying around me.......but just not enough time :p

Well, it held no surprises but playing through seperate ways to better understand the end. Also, the endings in REs are always in a manner that something remains unsolved, save for RE3 where they nuked the whole town :p But to say that the ending sucked.....I disagree. It was simple, nothing extraordinary about it. But it didn suck. I take into account the whole last chapter as its ending....

I dont know why the cutscenes werent made in real time, SH 3 pulled off some beautiful RT cutscenes on the PS2 so I dont know why RE4 couldnt do the same.
Well, RE4 was a port from GC to PS2 and SH3 was ported to other platforms from PS2 or may be it was designed seperately ground up on the PS2. And if you realize, SH3's cutscenes didn have that much action to them. THey were mostly chat sessions. RE4's cutscenes had lotsa action to them, and really cool directions like a bigtime movie. May be this is one of the reasons as well.

Lameness? no way! They actually wet ahead and brought it to PS2 so I think we can forgive them for the pre rendered cutscenes. Though it would've been cool to see ashley in that armour suit in the cutscenes...LOL.

I disagree, we can demand (from company like capcom) that they will make everything till the very end,and example has been given by yourself ;)

well since the games was on the small GC mini dvd's they had to compress the sound a bit to fit it on the 2 discs

well I've played the GC version so I know most of the game and how to kill bosses quickly

BTW when I beat the game I had a 88 % hit rate, died 23 times, saved 61 times, and killed 1035 enemies, cleared in 12 hours cuz I did it on professional mode after beating it in 2 days :p

Actually, my PS2 still plays GT3 and GT4 for some odd reason. Any other game and it will refuse to load. What a car maniac... :D

Now all of you are making me jealous. I think I might want to go over to my friends' places more often. :p

I have been a fan of the early RE series since I played them as a kid (I know, I was underaged, but that is also why it was fun :p), and the best I have to say is RE2... tell me Fawad (or anyone else), taking into account the time of release and quality expectations of the time, that RE4 is better? Many games fail to humour me now. :)
