I am new to the playstation emulation. Could someone get me up to speed. I have been into emulation since the start of mame and would like to learn about the playstation emulation. Does the emulators use backups or roms that are downloaded.

Thanks,

ePSXe supports PSX games that are on the original Playstation CDs, ISO files created from said CDs, and CDR(W) backups of games that you own. Note that making backups of games you haven't paid for is considered illegal and is looked down upon by the people of this forum. While it's possible that ISOs can be downloaded from the Internet, this too is illegal. Questions regarding where you can get said files will most likely result in either a warning or being banned (at least, from what I've seen).

For more information about how to go about setting up ePSXe for using your PSX games, I'd suggest checking the files in the doc/ directory, the support pages found on www.psxemu.com and past postings to the board. You can search for postings of interest via the use of the "Search" button at the top of the page. Before posting, please be sure to check out the board rules. If you're asking a question about a problem with a particular game, please mention how you're running the game (from a CD, CDR, or ISO), the configuration of your plugins and their versions.

Have fun! ;)

You can run backups of games that you own and have copied using a CD writer. ePSXe runs backups just fine. The Playststion games you will have to purchase yourself, since they are on CD Roms and cannot be dumped like cartridges can. ePSXe is designed to act like a real PSX and play PSX CDS, but since it is an emulator and not the real thing, some games have problems, the sound is not quite perfect yet (but it is getting there), and a very few games won't work at all. The pluses are, you don't need a PSX to play the games, the games (especially the 3d ones) are able to be greatly enhanced by your video card, and you can play them at better and higher resoulutions on your monitor. For best performance it is reccommended that you have a high end system, but some people w/lower end systems get excellent performance also. Stay away from illegally copied and "pirated" versions of games, these are nothing but trouble and are not worth your time.
Also illegal copies and the sites that carry them are not to be talked about or asked for help with here.
I hope I have been able to help fill you in some, sorry to get so long winded. Enjoy ePSXe and don't hesitate to ask for help here if you need it.:D
sincerely,

I just want to say thanks for the response to my question. It is nice to now that there are still some good people in this world that is willing to help a total stranger, and I look foward to emulating the playstation. I have several games and have not played them in a while, this will give me an excuse to play them. Thanks again.
