SCEE development boss defends real-time demos, boasts of ease of development

Speaking in an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz, SCEE development chief Phil Harrison has said that the PS3 will be cheaper to develop for than the PS2 was initially, with the system's power being much easier to exploit than its predecessor's.

"PlayStation 3, I think, is going to be cheaper to develop for than the corresponding period of PS2 development," he said in the interview, which is published on the site today.

"I know that's a fairly contentious statement to make, but there's a very good reason for that," he continued, before going on to discuss the fruits of the company's collaborations with NVIDIA and IBM - which, he says, will make life easier for developers as well as providing hugely impressive power for the system.

Harrison admitted that the PS2 architecture was "challenging" for developers, although he was quick to point out that "it didn't stop us having thousands of games and 80 per cent market share."

Also in the same interview, Harrison discussed the demos shown of the PlayStation 3 earlier this week - reiterating that the technical demos on display were all entirely real-time and running on PS3 prototype hardware, although the game footage clips were pre-recorded and some small parts may have been rendered for time.

that guy makes lots of sense. i like how hes talking bout downloading games and such. he has a bunch of good points, some are kinda .... pointless...some are stupid....

but....hearing him say "exboxthreesixty" just isnt as smooth as...peeessthree >_<. also, that one point that he brought up about xbox being the primary platform even for multiplatform games? i agree, but for a different reason. i think someone here on the boards mentioned that multiplatform games of this gen were designed for the lowest/weakest machine (most ppl wud say PS2 but really its a question of what ur talking about...). id say the same for next gen wud happen only xbox360 is at the bottom this time...

I think it is extremely funny that the playstation fanboys have said that the PS3 looks much nicer than the Xbox 360.. well, i only just saw the ps3 myself, its slim.. and thats it.. it looks bare compared to the xbox 360.. shame on you ppl :nono:

X-360 is going to rule, infact they should have just called it that At least microsoft introduces out "NEW" games too, instead of sony giving out the usual every time they release a console.. Ridge racer, final fantasy, crash bandicoot, tekken.. lol whats the bettings.. my money is on microsoft, dont care about polls, their where the power is at.. especially for PC gaming.

Blu-ray, i mean what good is that.. sony will have to downgrade the textures of every game or it will take eons for a game to load 1 level :agree:

Any bets on PS4.. Tekken 7-8-9-10? :lol:

because the ps2 was always said to be extremely difficult to program for and because sony wud have to be really stupid if they didnt look to fixing that with the ps3.

judging a console/company on the basis of sequels is quite funny actually. saying that "sony" is responsible for these evil sequels and "MS" is responsible for being original is even funnier i guess. piggy's post gave me good laffs

About Blu-Ray not being a great idea, who knows how fast those things read? Smaller laserbeam, less space needed to move. Isn't that why the GC had such nice load times?

Damn how technology has advanced, the slowest numbers on the ps3 is its 550mhz clock and its 512 L2 catch. Back in the day, a pc with 550mhz and 512mb of ram was damn nice.

I did read Katsuya's post before yours. I just wanted to know your arguments, since I'm also more interested in PS3 ATM. Since PS2's platform was regarded as the hardest to develop for, would you guys care to comment on how it was for Xbox and Gamecube, and why it was so?

Well im glad to hear that games on the ps3 will be easier to develop than the ps2 because i remember all the talk how games for next generation consoles are gonna sell for like $70 dollars or so.

You know what the funny part of all this is. I'll bet if you put the hardware of the 360 into the PS3 and vice versa, the results of the upcomming console war would be exactly the same. Sure people have been wowed by the PS3's superior technology (including myself), but at the end of the day hardware is merely a means to an end. The truth is, the determining factor here is brand name loyalty. People who enjoyed the games on the PS2 will come back for more, and people who enjoyed the games on the XBOX will do the same. And of course, those who found a reason to enjoy both console like me, will end up in the poor house after spending their savings to buy both of them .

The only thing that bugs me, is that there are too many people who refuse to give the XBOX a chance because of a personal bias either for Sony or against MS. The XBOX has in my opinion proven itself as a quality console (except in japan, boy did they screw that up...). When I go through the 15 games in XBOX library I see nothing but games I've enjoyed, and yet it seems the majority of people think the XBOX is nothing but a very expensive Halo player. Ok fine, so it did lag behind the PS2 in terms of good exclusives. I still don't regret buying it for a second. XBOX Live alone is reason enough to have an XBOX. If you can't find anything you want to play on the XBOX, you either aren't looking, or don't enjoy anything but quirky japanese games. Actually, I can identify a bit with the latter group, but that's why I had to buy a PS2 too .

Maybe I shouldn't worry though. From what I've seen the 360 actually has more good, exclusive games in the works than I've seen on the PS3. For Example:

Kameo: Elements of Power
Lost Odyssey and Blue Dragon
Gears of War
Dead or Alive 4
Perfect Dark Zero

And or course there's Halo 3. That's leaving out all the non-exclusives, the games that I'm not entirely convinced are sure bets, and the many, many games which have yet to be revealed.

So come on guys, give the XBOX a chance. Sony just doesn't deserve such a huge market share, and I need more people to play with on Live .

We'll see; all I know is that I purely looked at the quality of what was shown so far, and the ps3 trailers were clearly more impressive, that's not because "ms is teh suxxor" or anything, not to me at least, and I'm pretty sure many others think the same.
On the other hand, we won't really know until later if that difference is really as big as claimed. And the 360 will get a headstart for the holiday season, which ought to help.
And finally, I saw some very nice 360 trailers too, I loved the short PGR3 one.

Never believe what they tell you, the new consoles will be similar in performance.. Just read it all up yourself instead of asking people.. research this crap and you will see for yourself.

So Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Ni-Oh, and Fifth Phantom Saga are all sequels are they. Looks like someone hasn't actualy been watching the show. Asides the Xbox 360 had plenty of sequels on it. FFXI, PGR3, Perfect Dark Zero, and Halo 3 to name a few.

Uhhhh actualy given the nature of Blu-Ray, it should load faster than the Xbox 360's HD-DVD, although the difference is likely to be negligable.

Sony only said that the PS3 was going to be 35-ish times more powerful than the PS2. They never compared it to competing HW. Given the shots we've seen, this figure is not just hype.
The big N said their machine was to be 2-3 times as powerful as the Cube, not anything else.

Looking at the presentations shown, I'd disagree. I'd like you to show me some 360 demos which look better than the FFVII tech demo, Gundam or Motorstorm to back up any refuting to my claims.

Riiight, because the PS2 was all about racing games.... racing games like.... FFX? Star Ocean 3? Xenosaga? Disgaea?
If anything, it was the Xbox which had the greater volume of racing games.

PS3 - Said to be costing $500 at it's release, making it the most expensive console up to date.
360 - $360, good price, by the time PS3 is released I'm sure it will go down at around $299. MS is rich.

Where'dya get the $360 from? Regardless Sony most likely will change the price to compete if there is that huge a difference.
