I don't know about your DVD drive, but my Pioneer 10x DVD is working perfectly for PSX emus, and I have used it for "frequently accessing cd rom" for about 1.5 yrs. i'd say it's still working better then the average CD ROM drive
but for bonkers184, I'm afraid all you can do is try fivefeet8's suggestions. some drives are known to not read PSX CDs, and you cannot fix it
