If you can't/don't want to chip your PS2 you could always try Swap Magic. I use it for playing import games and backups and it works fine. You could use that to allow you to boot non-PS2 disks (e.g. the CD-R used for dumping your BIOS).

I don't know what the process is for dumping a memcard - never had to do it - but if you need to use a CD-R or DVD-R in your PS2 at any point as part of the procedure, a Swap magic would definitely help, as it lets you boot pretty much any disk. As for any other tools needed, I don't know.

If you order a swap magic, make sure you get the right sort of 'slide tool', depending on whether you have an original or slim PS2. I use SM version 3.6 PAL with slide card for the fat PS2.
