DuckStation has horrible FMVs!

805 Views 21 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  nomadspy2020
Been using ePSXe forever and since it's old emulator thinking it lacks features, I've decided to switch to Duck but no matter what settings I use the FMVs have these horrible lines all over them. Like blocks in a grid. No matter what ENCODER DITHERING or whatever it's turned on or off SOFTWARE and HARDWARE same thing. In ePSXe they play perfectly fine. Any solution to this?? Somebody posted this problem on Reddit but no solution there and they are telling him it's YouTube compression but ITS NOT. It's how are FMVs supposed to look on PS1 and ePSXe. https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroArch/comments/qn7vxi You can check his both screenshots for comparison.

Have you tried enabling chroma smoothing? Literally the setting to smoothe out color gradient in FMVs.

It's enabled by default for me. No luck.
Not much else then that you can do other than play around with filters and shaders since it's just a 240p 24fps video file, you probably have some bilinear filter applied in ePSXe.

Your information from reddit was 2 YEARS AGO. Have you tried an improvement version of Duckstation recently ? I haven't tried it, thought. If not much of improvement, all you can do is contact Duckstation developer at duckstation github then.

If you noticed his posted referring to REDDIT was actually 2 years ago. Dont you find it so suspicious or a confusion why he would post it in here ? SHRUGS

I see it's from two years ago but since I was using the latest version of duckstation I didn't think there was much improvement on the issue anyway. Had no idea there is another developer version other than the official one.
Can you show us your offical version of Duckstation and the latest one ? And the picture of the problem ? No, there is only one developer of this Duckstation version.. He was and is still working with RetroArch and its core as well.

Okay turns out I'm stupid and have no idea how GitHub works. The UI is super convoluted and confusing for me. Don't know how to contact the guy :/
Did you sign up Github first ? Register it then go to duckstation github and there you see: Pull requests. Click it then click New Pull requests then comment on it and you will get an answer from the developer. ^_^
Registered but there is no place to comment when I click new Pull request, that's the problem. Don't get it how this works.
Okay.. instead of Pull requests.. Click Issues. You should be able to comment on it.
I fail to see what's the issue here. Also, i'm pretty sure you can't open issues anymore, i think Sten got tired of that. There's a reason the Discord was set to private.

Anyway, you need to compare against real hardware, not against ePSXe.

The issue is these digital artifact vertical lines all over the FMVs which are not present in ePSXe or the real hardware. No matter what settings Duckstation uses there is no way to get rid of them. They are clearly visible even on the original resolution and aspect ratio. Other than that the emulator is perfect, games run and look amazing but the cutscenes are a deal breaker.
Well, i did some testing comparing against Mednafen and the "vertical slices" are indeed more pronounced on Duckstation no matter the settings/renderer.

Good luck contacting the dev about this.
Yeah, he set Discord to private and I am with him in Discord. He hate noobs who dont know what they are doing. Well, I just found out that issues was disabled so there is nothing you can do about it. Sorry. :(

Understandable then. Not the biggest issue ever.
