Vgs is overall a good emulator.
Although it is not free, it s one of the best emulator available.
I think also that it s a good emu for people who don t want/know how to configure the other ones (epsxe seems to be quite hard for certain people.)

So, a great compatibility, great sound.
A good emu.
Even if it s discontinued now.

Even now, with VGS being discontinued, I'm having a very hard time to decide if ePSXe (arguably one of the best emus around) is on par with -or better than- VGS. Before ePSXe's appearence on the psx emu scene, VGS was my all time favorite PSX emu. While the ease of use of VGS is welcomed, it is actually the EXCELLENT speed, sound, and compatibility that make me think twice before I say something like "ePSXe is the best". The thing about all the psx emus is that each one is good at playing something better than the other, so IMHO there's no point in saying "VGS sucks" (or that ANY other emu "sucks", for that matter). Even the recently updated FPSE plays cetain games better than even the all-dominant VGS & ePSXe ...
P.S.
yes, I DO believe that VGS lacks on the graphics department, but these are the exact graphics of a real playstation, and while considered "low quality" by PC users, I would never go as far as to say that they "suck" ...its a metter of personal taste actually :)

I'll have to agree with you about the memory card manager of VGS. It's adequate - it does its job, but that's all. The mem managers of Bleem & FPSE are better, but also not perfect. Thankfully, there are plenty of independent memory managers to go around :D

it's a funny thing, but when you think about it, "setting up" and using the VGS is STILL harder than that with a real Playstation.

I guess in that sense you can say the VGS has better emulation, and very much so, than any other psx emu :)

I think VGS tries to emulate a PSX in its truest form. A PSX doesn't come with advanced memory managers or anything(although VGS is missing the BIOS). As an emulator(software that makes the computer think it's something else) I think it hits the target dead on. It cuts all the crap and goes straight for what's important, the emulation. I find it to be the most accurate PSX emulator available and the most compatible, and it wins my favor in that respect.

1st, though not really helping, but let me congratulate Epsxe on a FAB job. Playstation rulez!!!

but for me, without VGS, there'll be no epsxe. started on vgs first, cos it was the ONLY emu to run a LARGE no. of games almost perfectly then. Even now, if u were to compare 2d games using VGS and Epsxe, i'll still go to vgs. Example: those who tried Tales of Eternia on PC, i believe u can really see the diff.
As of now, 2d sprites wise, epsxe still have some work to do, not forgetting the sound.

So i guess the 'WE' in ur title doesn't really stand.

Sad though, to see vgs go.....

anyone that want to go for sofware rendering better/recommended to go for vgs...because if you use epsxe software rendering you also have to update the software plugin and also involve in config.!!!

VGS's speed is definately the best part, however the sound sucks especially in Final Fantasy Tactics. Speed is perfect though.
My system is pretty crappy though.
PII 266
64MB SDRAM
ATI Rage Pro LT 4mb
24x CDROM
ESS Maestro Sound
It is a Laptop with 1024x768 LCD Screen

i doubt vgs is the best. yeah its easy but it also is missing alot of features. mainly no directx. and the sound is played either too long or too short. but i think vgs has better timing than epsxe. for some reason epsx runs games around 5 fps slower than an actual psx. yes my system should considered overkill for a psx emu

vgs is right on with all my games...except metal gear. if it weren't for the horrible graphics, i would use it a helluva lot more.
