Disabled sound

Hi there; this has probably been asked before, but I'd like a way to play games without the sound enabled. Since I'm not running vista I can't turn the program itself down, and I can't seem to make a game load up, either from the CD or an ISO, with the sound disabled I'd like to know if there is a way to play without sound.

An unusual request I imagine, since every google search I've tried has lead me to numerous people complaining that their games won't play with sound. I'm complaining that my game does play with sound :???:

So I guess my question is: is there anyway to play without sound? Or to turn the volume down.
