It's worth for PC gaming(especially oncoming titles) and if you do some encoding, gfx work, not really for dolphin : )
You can hit it's bottleneck in most games with OC'd c2d/q/phenomII
i5 might be a good idea too(not released yet)

If you are buying a procesor thinking on Dolphin.. forget it.

If you are buying a procesor thinking on new game releases, dont do it, cuz prices will drop soon, and ATM there is only 2 o 3 games that really uses x4 tek, GTA4, Crysis, and 1 more dont remember.

Conclusion, dont do it...

What kind of logic is that? Don't buy an i7 because it's just too powerful?

It's not really about whether or not it's 'too powerful', it's about whether you need that power right now, while it is still expensive. If the main motivation for this is Dolphin, then it might not be that simple.

Right now I use an e8400 core 2 duo (3ghz) for dolphin and can get 50 fps on brawl. (no overclocking)

I am going to sell this computer and build an i7 rig. Might i still be able to get similar results?

if not. how much work is it to overclock? i have no idea how to do it. i really would like to not overclock if i can because i want this to be stable and long lasting.

also. right now I am using the 64 bit dolphin for brawl. will 32 bit work just as well?
my brother has a pc with a 3.16 ghz core 2 duo. will it work for brawl? it has a 32 bit os.
When you get 50fps in brawl, do you mean in the middle of the battle or just menus? I'm wondering because i have a similar comp to yours.

we sure do ahave alot of I7 fanboys in here. I personally don't go for how many processors
a CPU has but PERFORMANCE via DOLPHIN. You give me a E8600 (OC),WIN XP SP3 x64, 4 gb's of DDR3 ram and a GTX 295 and i'll gladly stand in the frontline vs a I7 any day for DOLPHIN EMULATION. IN these days WHY pay more for the same performance levels. Five or the i7 cores are not usefull anyways. And i seriously doubt that many games will be optimized for it, its not really needed.Maybe in 3 or 4 years i'll change my mind, but for now NO WAY.

GO FOR THE HIGHEST C2D as possible and OC the BRAKES OFF OF IT. I BET YOU'll EASILY GET TO 4 ghz with a cooler like a cooler master V8 rifle/ OCZ Vendetta / or a Gemini.

With a good motherboard, cooler and procesor, i mean like 8400/8600 you can get 4ghz, and with Q9xxx you can too, my E7200 is rite now @3.8 and has nothing to envy the i7 .
