thermal paste is an essential substance that goes between your CPU and your CPU's heatsink and fan complex. thermal paste allows heat to be efficiently transfered between the cpu's surface and the heatsink and is mandatory for cpus since i think the pentium 2 cpus O__o. There are many brands of thermal paste but generally ppl like to use Arctic Silver 5. if u have not applied thermal paste after taking out your motherboard (assuming u also took off your cpu) or have self-made your computer without applying any (tho theres always the already included thermal pad on the retail p4 heatsink and fan), chances are that this is causing u problems.
