see my OS stats below. basically, some of the windows updates that I want (all "critical") will not install. they are downloaded on my machine, but every time I try to install them it gives me some BS error message about restarting and trying again. Clearing the IE cache has no effect. Where are these files stored so i can clear them and redownload the updates.

in order to install those updates form the win Updates site : you have to have those services running : automatic updates, Intelligent background Transfer and Cryptographic Services

I recommend you check out that site as you can dl the updates directly form there :
(you can also remove everything related to win Up with NLite when making a new WinXP CD, if you downlaod form that site)

Actually, it's Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) and you need version 2.0, now. It automatically detects that and would notify him upon accessing the site if there was something wrong.

Even better source for updates to use with nLite:

RyanVM's Windows XP Post-SP2 Update Pack

1.2.2 covers all updates up to May 12, and 1.2.3 will come out after the July round of patches.
