Hello.
A couple of days ago I decided to get myself my very first PS2, I have a whole mess of PSone titles that I wanted to play again with the filter and faster loading times but as I was going through my games I decided to play castlevania symphony of the night and it didn't work... Does that happen to all PS2s? I have the original version, if the greatest hits version does work I might as well buy one. Anyone has had that problem with their PS2s of the same or earlier production.
I will make a list of games I have tried so far that don't work or work with difficulties. IF there isn't a thread on that subject, I can or someone else for that matter can make a thread where they post their PS2 model number and which game don't work and which require standard loading and no graphic filter.
This is what I have so far.

SCPH-70012
Games that don't work
-none so far

Games that almost don't work
-Street Fighter alpha 2 (works only with standard disc speed, will be glitchy otherwise)
-Castlevania Symphony of the night (will not start up with FAST Disc Speed)
-Rival Schools (crashes in FAST Disc Speed during game)
-Brave Fencer Musashi(crashes on first in-game cinema when in Fast Disc Speed)

The funny thing about the PS2 is sometimes you need to use different booting methods to get some games to work. Here are the boot methods I use.

1) Just put the game in and press reset (standard boot method)

2) Open the tray, put the game in the tray but dont close it. Now hold down the Reset button so the tray goes into the PS2 and then turns off. Now simply press reset to start the PS2.

3) Put the game in the tray and press the eject button so it goes into the PS2. Now turn the PS2 off via the switch at the back left then turn it back on. Press the Reset button to make the PS2 active,

The procedures don't harm your PS2 in any way. You could also try cleaning the PS1 discs and checking for scratches if you havent already.

Hope this helps.

sorry to go off-topic but iam just wondering why you wanna get a PS2 now. i mean the PS3 will be out next year and ofcourse theres the PSP
Why not? There are lots of good games coming out right now and in the near future (MGS3 and Devil May Cry 3, for example). And many of the older games are pretty cheap by now. Moreover, right now the ps2 is pretty cheap, at $150 for a brand new one. The PSP will probably retail at around $200, and its gaming library won't be that extensive until a year or two have passed. The PS3 may be coming out next year, but it will probably be very expensive ($300-$400 I'm guessing). You'll have to wait a year or so for the price to come down to reasonable levels AND for the gaming library to build up.

very true, i got my PS2 last year but thats coz the prices are impossibly high in my country. The PS3 should be backward compatible atleast for PS2 titles. iam just worried that the developers are gonna forget the PS2 as soon as the new version of the console comes out. that would really suck.

Hmm..We have the original PS2 model and the original SOTN. It works fine. Are you trying to use one of the PS2's filtering or speed up techniques?

For example look at Street Fighter 3:
1. FL = Fast Loading
2. TS = Texture Smoothing

Street Fighter Alpha 3 - FL causes the game to crash. TS gives slightly better
picture.

Well after I calmed down a bit and tried the game again it worked with standard disc speed and smooth texture mapping. I have upgrade my list.
oh and Frostmourne, I have waited this long to get a PS2 because I honestly didn't need it, I have so many games for PS1 that I haven't even gotten around to beating. Also, a lot of my friends have had terrible experiences with their PS2s breaking after 2 years, and it scared me, for me to have layed down 300 bucks and 50 dollars for each gameback when it came out only to have it break within two years would really piss me off.
