nvidia nforce 5 series card i think. windows xp 32. i have spdif out. red light is on so it's hooked up to something. it IS enabled in the advanced volume settings. it's there. it's not grayed out, i have the volume up but it doesn't work. when i plug it in my denon reciever switches over to digital mode. indicating detection but no actual sound. do i need a new driver. could you recommend?

Check your Denon receiver to see what digital audio formats it supports. Then set your SPDIF settings to something that it supports. (i.e. PCM, bitstream, sample rate, bit rate, etc.) Most receivers have no problem with PCM audio at 16bit 48KHz.

You should be able to find options for this in your sound panel. Speaking of which, you do have your motherboard's nForce drivers installed right, or at least the proper audio drivers? Do NOT use drivers from Windows Update.
