I specifically would like to call the format.com function from c++

Also, if someone knows how to do it for -ix systems it would help as well :D

You shouldn't need the slash for a format command

What platform are you using? If you're using mingw it will accept a few things that are Windows specific, but it will also convert Unixy things so that it will work the same way on Unix as well. However drive letters cannot be made transparent..

Are you seriously trying to do system("format c:\")?

On another point, if I wanted to format certain partition with a custom block size of 4096, the command in unix would be as this?

mke2fs -b 4096 dev/hda3

Also, what would be the command for getting the currently mounted hd's?
