Black Screen (with sound?)

It appears that others are having a similar problem to mine. Basically, when I load a game, the screen stays black and nothing appears to load. However, I have save states in these games which I load and when I do so, the game appears to load because I can hear the music and such but the screen is still black.

Another "problem" I am experiencing is an error msg when I try to configure a plugin that pops up:

ePSXe.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point SMapLS_IP_EBP_20 could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll

Now, whether this is related to the black screen problem, I don't know because it doesn't crash the program, I can simply click ok and it'll let me go on to configure the plugins.

Now let me make it clear that these games have worked previously (that's how I have save states in them!!!) and I have not changed my hardware on my computer. But for the sake of thoroughness:

Games tried:
FF7
FF9
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Chrono Cross

Hardware:
Athlon 1.0 ghz
GeForce2 GTS
Sound Blaster Live!
Kenwood TrueX 72x (I use ISOs though)
Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad
Microsoft Windows XP professional

Again, let me reiterate, that I have had all these games work fine in the past. The factor that I cannot seem to reconcile is what changed precisely that caused the problem? Was it epsxe 1.5.2? or the fact that I installed Visual Studio .NET recently? Who knows? I hope YOU do.

Try uninstalling "Visual Studio .NET" and then run ePSXe to see if that is the problem. Kernal32 is part of the OS. Try searching the Microsoft Knowlage Base.
Either delete any file from your plugins folder with "TSG" in it, or intall "FORCE ASPI" which can be found in the downloads section of ngemu.com.. Or both..
Deleted the file you mentioned

I deleted the TSG file that you mentioned and it did fix the error messge problem (it no longer pops up), but the black screen still remains (with sound running)...Any suggestions?
Hey there, I got the same Computer specs as u, I'm pretty sure we have the same computer, And the only problem i have is that the screen hangs black, no matter how long i wait, my comp is still active, But epsxe is dead, It'd nothing with my hd, as it works perfectly on 98 with my dual boot
hmmm, well it'll do the same with me but I have some save states that I can load which loads the game in question that's why I can hear sound but there are no visuals. You might be able to do the same if you have some save states, but even if this were so I'm still not sure what it could be. Again, I've had previous versions work fine with XP so I don't think it's XP's fault specifically, maybe just a fault with the current version of epsxe? Then again, I recall have the current version work fine for a while with me then all of a sudden simply not working. My only guess was that it was because of Visual Studio .NET but why would that leave everything alone except the graphics?

I don't know if anyone will see this since this thread is so old, but I wanted to add something I think may be important. I was having the EXACT same problem. Suddenly I could not get ePSXe to play the games I had played many times before. I would get a black screen at start up. I remembered something about black screen being related to sound. I went into the sound plugin, and there is a tiny check box "allow sound" that was not checked. I put a check mark in it to allow sound, and everything is fine now. For me it started because I was trying to delete out all my save files, and in my monkeying around, I must have accidentally unchecked it. I hope this helps others who might encounter this, but I think it's pretty rare. This "black screen" is not related to the advice given for the "normal" fix, i.e., CPU overclocking set at 1 etc.

Yeah nah, none of this is worth doing and necroing a 21 year old thread for
ePSXe is abandonware and for quite some time now, DuckStation is the current ps1 emulator people should be using
